I am looking for some Rokslide members who have extensive knowledge/experience with the following:

1. Towing a camper from Eastern states out west for hunts

2. Towing a trailer from Eastern states out west for hunts

This is for an upcoming rokslide article, If you have experience doing this (multiple years, and have had bumps in the road and learned a few things etc.) please reply to this thread and I will send you a PM and let you know more and what i specifically need.

Nice opportunity to be involved and see your name in a rokslide article here on the website

I've done plenty of long distance towing, including hauling a boat cross country for a friend, and know the ins and outs of "prepping" a trailer and safe towing if that's what you're getting at. But, I don't generally use trailers for my hunting trips...

My joke for this one was that my hunting gear had gotten completely out of control.....

Sounds like someone out east just wants to hitch a ride with someone with a camper. Your tent can't be that bad.

Towing across the midwest flatlands is a piece o cake.
Knowing how to pull in the mtns is where it gets informative

Completely agree, even in high wind KS towing a camper across KS is much less stress then over mountain passes. There is a ton of good preparing info on the RV forums. This past year a buddy from TX blew out 3 of 4 tires an hour from his house, put a nice hole in his floor.

Personally I don’t think distance matters if you are doing an article on this but rather general prepared ness and proper camper setup, hitch etc etc is key to traveling stress free no matter the distance.

very good point, after all they say most accidents happen within a 10 miles of home

Drove a 40 ft Rv towing a 2001 F150 to North Dakota....mostly.....once. We were longer than the tractor trailers, especially when/after the hitch broke.
Drove multiple times towing a dog trailer as well.
Not sure what I learned since we had bearings go out in Wisconsin.

A few possible bullets points:

Knowing what temperature your trailer axles can safely operate - i.e what is too warm to the touch?

Knowing how to loosen/tighten axle nuts or even replace axle bearings on the road.

Setting up trailer brakes.

Wiring harness problems.

Inspection of tires for improper wear.

Changing a tire with a load on.

Changing a tire on a steep grade.

Plenty more than these.

Good luck with your article

Also another thing to consider is a road side service membership tailored to campers, as a camper tow can get quite expensive.

I have no real experience except one trip. Pulling a trailer of atvs and hunting gear. A 1/2 ton truck is not made for a lot of that in the Rockies with a trailer with no brakes.

90% of the article should be written about preparation and pre-trip inspections of equipment. As mentioned, trucking across Kansas or Nebraska is pretty easy going...except for that time there was a tornado.

Mountain passes or inclement weather is when it gets western; folks need to be prepared (chains, flares/cones/roadside service) for the unexpected. The mountains will challenge your tow vehicle regardless of what you have, know your equipment and it's operating parameters. Obviously the intent would not be to deter folks from coming out, just maximize preparation.

Campers? Ha!

Grab that 30 ft stock trailer with 6 horses, saddles, freezer, generator, hunting gear, buddies, and all the other stuff and you'll find out what you're made of coming off a high pass at midnight lol
