Arrow weight for elk

Goldtip Hunter Pro 300 gr, 50 gr insert and 125 grain head for a total of 500 gr. Hoyt 70# Powermax.

Have an aluminum riser Hoyt Pro Defiant 34 with the standard cams, can't remember the name, 75% let off, 30 inch draw, shop was supposed to set it at 80 lbs, little hand drawer thing says 83, not sure how accurate it is. Anyway it was pushing a 550 grain at 280 fps but I think that Day 6 was still a little stiff even at that setting. Snyder told me to run the 100 grain components up front so I ended up with finished arrow weight around 608 grains. Using the Centric Components with stainless collar. Have a wrap, 4 Blazer Heats and a G nock. I also have the aluminum sleeves in case I want to screw in one of my 150 grain Ozcuts instead of a 100 grain head.

I'm pushing a 250 spine Day Six 610 grain arrow at 260 out of 83 pound Hoyt Pro Defiant.

I've got a buddy shooting almost that same weight setup on a DaySix at 613gr at 261-263 out of a new Vertix. Hits like a hammer.

His Vertix has the 75lb mods at 29.5". His bow liked the 250s. They're all a little different on the tune.

That thing is probably deathly quiet. I'm sure the new Mathews is a more efficient set up than the old Pro Defiant. Garrett Weaver had one of the Elk River Archery guys shooting an RX3 over 300 fps with a 600 grain arrow.

Yeah, it's quiet, but it's a Mathews so I'm out lol. It kills him that I can crush his numbers but I have a 31.5" draw too.

400+ with a quality broadhead your fine. Mine are 415? With the montecs and kills elk dead. Dont overthink everything, put that energy into practice and training. Crank up weight and focus on placement, to me that is always what matters most. Good luck with draw and hunt...

I’m shooting 545 grain arrows 73 pound draw at 29 inches wife is shooting 515 grains 25 inch draw at 50 pounds both shooting northern Broadheads.

I’ll be running Killin Stix Ventilators and wasp Drones for elk this year. My set up is 430 gr arrow at 343 FPS. I’d rather have a flatline trajectory for elk than a slow heavy arrow. There is confidence when knowing I’ve got a set up that will hold an elk vitals from 0-50 yards with one pin. I’ve shot / and seen elk shot with lighter setups and speed always trumps heavy arrows in my book. Used mechanicals in the past.....make sure your shooting them for the right reasons...seen lots of real good brand name mechanicals fail on impact and that’s mainly why you loose penetration. Run what your comfortable with and shot placement is always key. Test broadheads out first if you can. Tried and true single bevels, COC and old time favorites like the wasps are hard to beat. Just make sure your Bows tuned for them.

yep, On my Hoyt I use the Gold Tip Kinetic Pierce Platinum 300. Total arrow weight 475 grains., Work great on elk. I use Day six 350's for my trad bow, total weight 585 grains and I like those as well.

I shoot black eagle rampage 300 spine with 30gr added to the half out total weight is 460gr. mathews traverse 28"/70# is only sending them around 265.

I'll be using 560 to 580 grain TAW with woodsman heads and 20% FOC.

I shoot a 450-500ish gr arrow around 290fps. 29.5" Draw 75# and have no problem passing through everything I shoot at. I personally believe that it is more about a well-tuned bow with quality arrow flight then it is really high FOC or a super heavy arrows.

My typical rule of thumb is try and get the heaviest arrow I can out of the bow at 270 FPS. If I upgrade to a faster IBO bow I will add weight to get me back at the 270 threshold. With most current bows, assuming you are shooting 60-70 lbs and average men’s drawlength you should be in the 450-500 total arrow weight range easily.

I’ve killed them with as little as 430 gr but I was shooting too fast. I’m personally sitting at about 510 right now at the speed I want. Next year a change to my bow will allow me be be at about 540 but keep my speed close to the same. Lots of ways to do it but for me it’s about maintaining a certain speed I want. This just so happens to allow me to shoot the arrow weight I want as well
