Wondering if anyone has strong feelings and or experience with arrow setup for moose. My father-in-law will be moose hunting this fall and I think he needs more weight, but curious to others thoughts. He has 27 in BE rampages with the half-out and 125 gr points and blazers. Total arrow weight is currently 447 at 254 fps, but will go to 457 by the time he puts in his lighted nocks. He's uncertain on broadhead yet, but likely Vipertricks, Trocars, Micro Hades, or Wac'Em I believe. Thanks in advance.

I would use that setup.

I shot a moose with a very similar arrow setup ( 445grains) a few years back and had a clean pass through at about 18 yards. Was shooting slick tricks

His arrow weight is fine. A good cut on contact head will be a good choice as he’ll get better penetration than a 3 blade head.

I’m not an expert as I’ve only killed one shiras bull, but that weight should probably do it. I was a little heavier, 496, and got 2 complete pass throughs. If he wants to tinker then going up won’t hurt (I personally like the Valkyrie system to get up there on arrow weight). But, season is getting close so maybe its better to just make sure he’s proficient with his current set up.

You can’t cheat the mountain

Heavier is better, but you have plenty of weight in that setup. I used a Slick Trick Mag on my 480 grain setup shooting somewhere around 280 fps and got plenty of penetration on my shiras.

I will be using a 635 grain two blade setup for my AK/Y moose hunt this fall, but that's only because I have the bow setup from a bear hunt this spring.

Last bull I killed I was using rampages that came in at 500 grains with 100 grain Soilds. I got a easy pass through and he went ass over tea kettle in about 15 years. Personally that's my minium with a COC head for moose
This year I am shooting BEA Spartans that come in at 525 grains with 100 grain iron wills.
If I had longer draw or was pulling a bit more weight I would bump my arrow weight up.

I would definitely use a coc head or at least a head with a leading to the top main blade like viper trick.
