First post on Rokslide, been following along for years. This is driving me crazy though. This is a 350 spine maxima red sd. It should weigh 9.4 grains per inch per their specs. It weighs 311.5 shaft and veins only. That is 10.7 grains per inch for a 29” arrow. Am I missing something? Assembled with a 100 grain broadhead arrow weight is 480.5. CE specs say it should be 9.4 gpi (29), 44 grain insert (more like 54), 9.9 grain knock ( 8.3 by my scale), 4.4 gr collar (4.1), 100 gr broadhead = 430.9. All help appreciated!! Thanks guys

9.4x29=272.6

Plus insert
Plus vanes
Plus a little for glue depending...

Did you account for fletching weight? My AAE vanes typically weigh around 8.4 grains each which comes in at 25.2 grains for 3.

That would get you closer with glue, etc.

Your numbers are bouncing around. One thing at a time. Bare arrow with vanes weighs what? It includes an insert, there is no nock in the pic and three vanes.

It is 311.5 bare arrow with vanes. No nock, collar, insert, anything. If it is the vanes and glue that make it 311.5 that is 38.9 grains/3 vanes is 12.96 grains per vane, that is crazy.

Just kind of depends on the vanes. Some are more than others. Google can get the weights

Look down the arrow tube make sure its empty, double check measurements.

Thanks for your feedback, my research says they should weigh 6.5 grains each. I have weighed multiple arrows. I started with a hunting arrow out of my quiver then went to one I broke on a tree to diagnose the weights of individual pieces. The two arrows are within 5 grains of each other with all components. With vanes+5 grains allowance for glue, it’s still 14.4 overweight which seems like a lot to me. Maybe arrows can just be off that much, I’ve never investigated it before.

why not just strip the vanes and weight a bare shaft.

what is the purpose of this drill. does the 14 grains affect anything?

Feradyne doesnt list a 300 spine arrow but their specs are unclear
from their website
Sizes: 250 (8.3gpi & .400 spine), 350 (9.4gpi & .350 spine), 450 (11.1gpi & .300 spine)

I’m about to do just that. I do a lot of rifle reloading and am used to extreme precision. .5 gr/inch just seemed like alot to me on a shaft. Also, with the 14 grains from the shaft and other overweight components the complete arrow weighs 480.5 instead of 450. That is significant, even if I am better off for it. If this is the norm, I don’t want to set up a FMJ if it’s going to weigh 30 grains more than I plan.

Its not uncommon for shafts to weight .3 to .4 grains more an inch then the listed specs. I think its mostly in the labels. As long as all the arrows are close to the same it doesnt matter IMO

Lots of variation in weight between arrow batches in most brands. That is why some of the higher end ones let you order by the weight of bare shafts. For example, I shoot gold tip pro hunter arrows . When I order them I tell them I want the shafts to weigh 286 grains, just like the previous batches.

I used to shoot Carbon Tech whitetail75/95 arrows. After a year I ordered another dozen, each shaft weighed over 25 grains more than the first batch145B0529-D132-4F39-8558-30BFB43276FE.jpeg

What is the red section of the shaft? Wrap, paint, ?? I'd bet whatever it is, it isn't included in the gpi.

I would weight them all individually and if they are the same make adjustments to get the weight and the FOC you desire for your set up.
I f not all the same send them back

It's the mythical Carbon Express "Red Zone" that improves accuracy by a factor of 4. As to what it really is, my guess is unicorn blood.

Its kind of like racing stripes or flames on a car - helps it go faster.

to the poster, i think your overthinking this… what is your target arrow weight and add weight to point or rear or cut arrow accordingly. Just be mindful of spine. Ive heard your spine match should be priority over weight. Yes weight matters but just get to a lethal threshold then stop worrying.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Initially I thought my arrow was 50 grains heavier than it should be was my reason for posting. I weighed the vanes and have accounted for some of that weight, but ultimately the shaft is 17.7 grains heavier than it should be. I am curious to buy other arrows and components and see if I have this problem with them. I would expect these arrows to be impressively close to spec for what they cost.
