That's one of those do as I say not as I do things :). I agree though, everytime I have taken a softshell it's only use has been as a pillow and every year the GIf shows up putting softshell thoughts in my head even though I know it will not be used.

Yep, you're wrong, but I do run just about everything throughout the year. Doing that let's me speak intelligently when writing articles like this......crazy concept for sure:)

Aron, any suggestions for rain jacket top that won't break the bank and won't be torn to pieces busting through brush?

I was just appreciating the irony. don't get to worked up there big guy, nice write up

Do you need it to be camo and what's your price range?

Not sure if it needs to be camo, it'd make me feel cooler, but id rather have function over form. would also like something that will cover a broad range of temperatures, and if it were 160-180 dollars would be awesome.

ive been running the marmot precip for two seasons now and that thing is amazing. I hunt western Washington,I think that speaks for itself as far as amount of rain but also its a sticker bush and reprod jungle. i drag that thing through some serious garbage and not a rip or failure yet. plus its very light and packable. you can get them new for 100 bucks, i got mine new off ebay for around 60 i think

Hey Aron,

When your sitting and glassing in cold weather do you find 2 layers of merino, a puffy, and the rain gear outershell keeps you warm enough or do you add another merino layer? I'm getting close to eliminating my guide guide jacket but I find myself wearing it for warmth and durability.

Staining my rain gear with dirt makes me nervous, it seems like the dirt would hold moisture and act like an abrasive to the DWR finish wearing it out quicker. What are you noticing on that?

I really like the Kaldo from Kryptek for this; it's quite and a great wind blocker! Taking the Kaldo allows me to cut down on the overall weight of my clothing list and have a multi use rain jacket at all times.
What about a camo rec? To be used as a complete replacement for softshell?

When I'm glassing, I've found that one merino layer, a puffy and the Kaldo is plenty for me to stay warm. The Kaldo is much better at blocking the wind than the Guide, so that is what makes the big difference.

You shouldn't be able to stain your rain gear (not very easy anyway), and it hasn't been an issue with me. I've gotten it dirty for sure, but not stained.

Are you still wearing "softshell" type pants or using rain gear bottoms in lieu of.
I ditched my attack pants on the last 2 trips and used the chugach pants. I got hot hiking when the sun broke through and I ended up going back to the attack pants for breathability.

I run the Kaldo in place of softshell, but only when glassing or rainstorms.

They have full length zippers, so it's easy to get them on over my Valhalla pants.
