Just put an LH4 4-16x on a .17wsm for prairie dogs out in S. Dakota. Had a blast and whacked one at 300 yds.
I shoot 500 yds and closer. It's the least expensive scope that's worth anything certainly in the $250-350 price point. You're certainly not going to find anything better in that price range.
I have Vortex FFPs mostly Diamondback FFP Tacticals, on all my rifles, but 6 yrs ago in Montana my brothers Vortex PST Gen 1 got knocked around in the scabbard and was off by damn near a foot when we got home.
Since then, I've been wrapping electrical tape around my turrets--yea even with my Nightforce SHV F1 scope--yup, I'm THAT paranoid.
But when I got the .17wsm I love the FFP, Christmas tree retical. Illuminated retical (I really could care less about the IR retical, but it's a feature.) And the glass IS better than my diamondbacks. But it has CAPPED TURRETS, along with the ability to unscrew the elevation and windage knobs and return them to zero. It's not a "zero stop" that you cant click down any further than your set screws or shims or push zeros, but it's more of a "return to zero" so you can still click up or down, but then return to the zero notch on the knob.
The ONLY thing I'm not a huge fan of is that the retical has MOA numbers every 4 increments. I prefer numbers every 2 MOA, like my Diamondbacks.
The retical is a dot in the middle with a gap to 1 MOA hash, then a 2 MOA long pillar that you can measure from 1-3 MOA, then another gap then the 4 MOA post that then lists the MOA numbers every 4 minutes.....
So instead of just reading 2-4-6-8 MOA numbers, I gotta count individual hash marks between the numbers. So 0, 4, 8, 12
If I have to shoot something at 7 MOA, I gotta find 4 MOA then count down to 7 or find 8 and count up to 7....
Not my preference. Wish it was numbers every 2 MOA like my Diamondbacks.
That being said, I ordered another LH4 for my 30-06. It should be here in 2 weeks.
Yeah I know it's not a Nightforce or SFWA that all RokSlider's have hard ons for. But I've never had a scope fail me. And I don't mind going out before my hunts to check my zeros. Thw Arken passed the 18" drop test, and that's fine by me if the gun tips over after being set against a tree. Even with my NF, if I dropped it, I would still have to reverify zero to have peace of mind. They're all mechanical tools, and everything mechanical can break.
Recertifying zero in fact, I prefer it, just to get more trigger time and verify my stuff and it makes me feel more confident. And yes--I still reverify my zero with my 300WM Tikka T3x with my Nightforce SHV. I'd feel nervous if I didn't. 5-20 rounds to reverify is worth my piece of mind for a hunt.
So far, I really like the LH4 scope and certain the price. It checks a lot of boxes and so far it's been everything I want in a scope.
