Hey all,
I'm curious as to what paper maps you are using? Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, Washington.
After the dust clears from the draws and you know for sure where you will be headed...whether through the draw or from your backup plan...do you buy and use paper maps still?
If so please share what type you're using and where you're finding them.
I use OnX currently and like it, but there is just something about having a paper map that rocks!

In all seriousness I enjoy having paper maps, I usually just print them off of Google Earth and laminate them.

I have not used a paper map in a very long time. Use to teach how to read maps, but with all the down loads for your smart phone it is a lot nicer to carry. I know there is a place for paper but for me I just have not needed it. I switched from Onx to basemap and have liked the switch so far, they both have there advantages though.

I still have all my blm maps from Montana though I haven’t been there in several years, and have OnX if I need it. I told my wife one of these days i was going to assemble my Montana maps and wallpaper a man cave.

Here in AK if I’m going to a specific drainage on a drop hunt, I’ll order a mytopo waterproof map as backup. I figure worst case scenario I have some good kindling. I love my OnX, various web maps, but sometimes it’s just nice to see the whole picture at once.

I get unit maps and custom maps from Mytopo, and supplement those with maps printed off the fish and game website that I laminate and keep in my bino pouch like flash cards

I'll probably always bring a paper map as a backup to OnX or GPS.

MyTopo.com has entire GMUs on one sheet at a 1:100,000 scale (or "zoomed out" wide area/less detail). Shows topo and land ownership.

USGS 7.5 minute quads are more detailed ("zoomed-in" or 1:24,000 scale I think) but obviously it may only show a small part of your GMU on a page. Much better for planning and navigation though once you have narrowed the area to a handful of square miles.

If I draw this year, I'll be buying a couple full size maps - something nice about having paper in hand for reading and writing on.

I will have onX but only to show me when I need to turn around to keep from trespassing.

A dying breed? They’re not dying in my house! I absolutely love paper topo maps and find myself poring over them quite often, especially after the tags come out if I was lucky that year. When I have a place picked out, I’ll go to mytopo and custom make a waterproof topo, and I’m always carrying one on the hunt.
