Archery Hunting with an Elk Decoy

Last fall I walked across some open sage brush to get to an aspen draw that opened on to a meadow. It's been a good spot for an evening sit. I took my Hunt Comfort pad to sit on and I guess it looked like a cow elk butt as I hiked in. As soon as I got to the aspens an unseen bull bugled from across the meadow up in rocks and trees. Then here he came. Not in a big hurry but definitely on a mission. As usual with my bull encounters, I only had a cow tag but it was fun.

My "decoy" .

Here he comes.

All the way to 13 yards. Never spooked just walked up the draw bugling. This summarizes many of my bull encounters carrying a cow tag. I've got some great video of him tearing up a tree at 40 yards but I don't know how to post them here. I don't know if this is a decoy endorsement but it does keep me carrying the pad.

I was thinking the decoy seemed like a hassle and not worth the added weight but this pad sounds like a good dual purpose item lol. I’m sure it was a cool experience with that bull.

ultimate predator decoys. Yeah thats what I walked with, never actually mounted it on the bow, just nice how small it packed up.
I have their eastern turkey decoy. It definitely packs light and small! Figuring out how to properly fold that thing the first time was a disaster lol. All is good now tho! I would recommend them for sure!

Have never had the desire to have one...mostly because the majority of spots I encounter elk are so thick that bull would already be in range before ever seeing a decoy.
I also am constantly on the move...and willing to chase elk as needed...last thing I want to do is have to run back and grab decoy to try and keep up with the elk I'm chasing.

Just too much extra movement and extra thought when I'd rather just try to remain unseen.

I'm sure in less pressured spots with good open setups they can work fine...just not made for the high pressure thick public land I hunt (and I'm often over lapping a muzzleloader season and occasional early cow season - so there's a safety factor as well).

Good Luck!

I have the one of the montana decoys. I tied a string on it so I can hang it so I don't carry the poles. I keep it on the outside of the pack so I can just reach back and grab it. I usually just hang it in a tree close. Ive had bulls look at it, and brother had one pulling a nice bull past me once. Full draw 23 yards, waiting on him to clear some brush and the wind switched.......
