Just got word that I probably won't get the time off in September as I originally planned (Colorado) ....however i have October available. Are there any western states with archery available in October for elk? It would have to be a state with OTC tags.

Montana would fit that and has some great late rut hunting when the cows who didn't get bred in the first rut come back in to heat.

Yep. I had bulls still bugling like crazy in the middle of October this year. You'll likely deal with colder weather but nothing major. Nice part about late archery hunting is fewer other hunters to deal with.

There's a sweet Eastman's episode with Dan Pickar hunting MT elk at the end of the archery season. Looks really fun.

Evening of October 25th I was surrounded by screaming bulls ! It was awesome ! They shutdown around 1am on the 26th and that was the last bugle I got to hear this fall.

I was pretty surprised to hear good bugling that late but cows need to be bred. I also heard some bugling opening rifle but not nearly the level of some of the archery stuff. I told my son this morning that the first time he's surrounded by bulls bugling, it will change him. I know it changed me.

Ain't that the truth! Definitely changed my life for the better!!! I hunted elk in early Oct (8-12th) this year and heard only four bugles in those four days. It was really tough going. I was definitely in elk, but they were tight lipped for sure. I was in that same area in mid Sep and they were screemin' their fool heads off. It's all about... ... ... ... ... ... ... timing!

You can hunt elk with a bow in Colorado with a rifle tag, but you still have to follow all the rifle hunting regs.....i.e. orange, etc.

I believe MT is the same way. Archery only season and general season. By the time archery season is over, I'm ready to break out the old "long bow".

You will have to double check the regs for AZ but I know there are a few OTC tags for elk where they just want them gone. It's definitely a tough hunt as the units are pretty strict and can be scattered through peoples back yards. My father-in-law bought one of those tags 2 years ago and located the elk almost everyday... about 1/4 mile on the wrong side of where he could hunt.

Thanks for all the great info, I really want to find a state with archery only in October so I don't have to deal with the extra hunters. However I just looked up the non-res tags in Montana $$$$ holy cow!!
