I have a regular AR 15 shooting 223 at coyotes and Ive tried softpoints and ballistic tips and it never seems like it has enough knockdown like id like. What are people shooting instead ? I want a FLAT caliber. 6.5 grendel is too slow for me. Its hard to judge distance at night . AR 10s get heavy .

Also anyone have a good sling I can chest mount the rifle ? I dont like it over my shoulder as its always falling off.

Sounds like you need a 224 Valkyrie upper. I don't have one but the ballistics are intriguing out of an ar 15 platform.

I had the same thought process and ended up buying an AR10 6.5 CM and the dang thing is so heavy with the thermal up top and a full mag that I don't hunt with it anymore. I'm back to using the AR15 223 and just earholing everything that I want DRT.

223/5.56 with the correct bullets will not leave you wanting for more “knockdown;” especially on a coyote, of all things.

Ive tried 50 grain Vmax and 55 grain softpoint both from the Fiocchi family and sometimes results are great and sometimes they are.

What about a 22-250? I'm in the market for a new AR for predators. I really wanted a 22-250, but decided i prefer an AR15 platform and plan on a 6.5 grendel now, if it was a bolt action I would have the 22-250.

You want 224 Grendel. Keep it on a ‘15 platform. Bullets are too good.

I like what I've seen/heard about the .224, but bullet selection isn't great, and I don't reload yet. That's one reason I decided on 6.5, plus that is a good round for whitetail.

I use a 243 using 58 and 75 grain vmaxes quite a bit for coyotes. Flat shooting and packs a pretty good wallop. I don't have an ar10 though, just a bolt action. I ended up getting a heavier duty tripod and saddle for my ar-15/thermal as even that was heavier than I prefer.

I just put a night rig together. My thought was 22 nosler since it is so hard to judge distance at night and I basically wanted a laser beam trajectory. I had a extra wilson lower in the safe though and found a smoking deal on a complete Wilson 224 V upper and went that route instead. Pretty darn flat shooting and can easily do less than moa with a trijicon thermal. I will put it to test this fall on the predators.

Slings since none mentioned, Blue Force Gear, Vickers Tactical and Magpul all have 2 point slings that work well for slinging the rifle on the front side. Mount rear attachment point on the right side (far side) of the stock and it will hang noticeably better if you shoot right handed.

If the grendel is too slow for you, you may want to look at the 6.8spc-II as it runs a bit faster than the grendel up front and does well on deer.

For what it's worth my AR10 in 308 weighs a hair over 8 lbs unloaded. Most people that pick it are surprised how light it is. A cousin of mine uses 110 Vmax out of his 308 for coyotes.

I would also echo what Rockwell said about looking at the 6.8 SPC.

It seems like you hit em heart lung they run 80 yards and tip over - which ain’t bad but man they can get into some shit that’s hard to find them in that 80 yards . You can drop them in their tracks if you hit em shoulder .

A couple of my friends have put together AR platform 22 Nosler‘s specifically for calling competitions.

I carried my Ruger 77 243 Win this past year with 65 gr V-Max which flattened them even on marginal hits.

I really like my 6.8 AR for hogs. The only downside is the magazine options, but the round definitely gets the job done.
