I'm gonna comment on applying for tags in units that are clearly stated (IN RED) to have a high percentage of private land in them - I assist a close friend who is the registered land owner agent for at least a 1/2 dozen ranchers in NE Oregon, specifically the Chesnimnus Unit / Zumwalt game area - In the Oregon synopsis it is clearly stated multiple times that when making application for elk tags (or any tag for that matter) in certain game units / areas, one should arrange for access or trespass by permission BEFORE applying - We have been unundated with calls and emails "asking" for access to certain private land holdings in the last couple of weeks by hunters stating they drew a tag, well after application time - Some of these individuals have called ODFW to complain AFTER being informed that maximum number of hunters for these properties has already been allotted long ago - It appears that many hunters don't realize several factors involved in this venue:
A) the land owners have chosen us as agents, it's not the other way around - these landowners DO NOT wish to be bothered by hunters bugging them hence the agents being in place to do that for them, these land owners expect us to keep every person AND LIVESTOCK to be kept out of harm's way during these hunts
B) some people seem to think they have a "right" to access private land merely by contacting and asking the landowners' permission - this IS NOT the case - being agents for said land owners entails management of the numbers of hunters on a given property at any one time or hunt period, there is HUGE liability for we agents as well as the land owners and an accident will ensure one thing for sure, the end of hunting of any kind being allowed on that (and probably other) land holdings
C) contacting and complaining to ODFW will only cause the department to get involved which we GUARANTEE will not help anything - we have and strive to maintain a good working relationship with the ODFW so their work load does not increase (nor their stress levels)
D) trying to "out bid" existing permitted hunters or steal away all rights just pisses all of us off, keep that in mind
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION !
