Anyone use their tripod as a shooting rest?

Yes.

I run an outdoorsmans quick release on all .y tripods. Can switch from head to shooting v in seconds.

I am not affiliated with outdoorsmans but use and highly recommend their products.

Definitely not cheap but it's usually your permanent solution.
How stable is the shooting v? I would think a downhill shot would cause the rifle to slide

The shooting v is just a v to rest your rifle on. It is not a clamp and does not attach to your rifle so yes the rifle could slide in the v on a down hill shot.

I will try and get some photos up tonight.

I have RRS dovetail plate on my rifle and spotter (they also make an adapter for binos). This way with the quick release on the RRS leveling base (or an anvil or ballhead if you prefer those), you can get your spotter set up in seconds; switch to rifle, etc. with ease and efficiency. Importantly, both are locked in and it is a stable shooting platform which is really helpful when in thick Sage. You can set up the tripod and get the rifle above the sage and shoot kneeling or sitting.

tripod is 2.2 lbs and weight rating is 25 lbs

RRS leveling base with quick release is very light.

Regarding stability...don’t think that you can through a rifle on their; clamp it down; and you can bang steel out to 1000. It takes some technique ans practice. However, any decent shooter will easily become proficient. I can hit 1 moa steel standing out to 600 and have gone out to 1180 seated tripod.

Nice set up Big Ern. How did you mount the plate to the bottom of the stock? I was thinking about doing that with T nuts but it would be where the action is bedded.

I had my gunsmith mount it. There are a couple of threads on how to do it on this forum or SH. I think you are on the right track.

Also, for anyone interested in switching to arca rail and tripod, figure out what system you want to use and stick with it across your gear. I learned this the hard (ie expensive) way.

example: don’t put a 419 arca rail on one rifle, an rrs dovetail on your spitter, and a sunwayfoto arca on your other rifle. the measurements are all a tad different. I put RRS dovetails on my spotter and both rifles i have for the tripod. I picked the RRS because i was using there leveling base and it is the perfect interface. I also have a sunwayfoto ballhead with their quick release and can use it with eveything since their quick release is adjustable fors size/tension. Because all my plates are the same once I set the size on this ballhead it is compatible with all my gear.

A machinist here on Rokslide makes the arca plates.

There are some vids on YouTube

Awesome, this set up seems super efficient. Thanks for sharing 👍

Yes and no on making a point. Most companies say they machine to the same standard. I have never measures and don’t know their tolerances. I only have my personal experience using the 3 I mentioned. I would get some slippage shootinf my buddies rifle with a 419 rail in my RRS. Not noticeable just clamping stuff in. But, would get some slight slippage when shooting standing tripod: rifle mounted and leaning hard into it; had a sling mounted from the front flush cup back to my belt with a carabiner to put a lot of back pressure on the front of the rifle to take any movement out, and I would get slippage whilst firing. Who knows...maybe a it’s a bad sample or maybe my rrs isn’t in spec. It still shot fine and clamped up, but the slight slippage was there whereas when going RRS-RRS it is locked in. As for the sunwayfoto arca, this was a small arca that I mounted to a spotter. This was before RRS became the gold standard for PRS type stuff. They may have changed their specs now.

I guess my point (probably poorly made) is that by standardizing on your arca rail brand, you take a variable out of the equation.

I’ve cut out a small table from scrap aluminum and attached a small ballhead for LRF on left side, picatinny rail on the right for a spotter and a bag rest in the middle for rifle or binoculars.
I may add a quick disconnect on the tripod for direct mount of panhead or table mount81F7ECDE-04FA-4E47-A1D4-AAC81EE6C326.jpeg

I have a triclawps coming tomorrow. I was going to get a Reaper grip but they never have them in stock.

I run a anvil on rrs legs for glassing and shooting. Carried it on my dall sheep, and moose hunt last year. I have posted pics in a few posts.
It will be with me on many more hunts, covers so many more shooting situations with a very stable set up

I think I’ll keep my 0311, but I could probably part with my pig Saddle. Shoot me a pm if you’re interested.

Appreciate it, but I want to get it set up for my camera first ( will be used the most for it) then get the stuff to shoot rifle and pistol off it.

There is a lighter version of the pig/hog saddle. Called the tri-clawps and it’s cheaper too.
Second on the Triclawps. I highly recommend. I use a Triclawps on my rifle at all times and quickly switch it to my tripod when setting up a longer shot.

I use a Primos Trigger Stick Gen 3 Series – Jim Shockey Tall Tripod. It is multi purpose, comes with a standard camera mount and a "V" mount for my rifle. It is also an excellent walking stick.

Pull the trigger and the legs extend to the perfect length - even on uneven ground, it is also very light weight.
RE: "it is also very light" - For the Tall tripod? Whachu been smokin'? I have the kneeling height one and it's already not light. However, when setting up on a hill... with the three legs of it, it makes it easy to setup for glassing on a hill side.

You don't necessarily need to swap out the Outdoorsman Micro Pan Head for that "V". The other day I cranked the Binos all the way backward so that I could rest the rifle barrel in-between the two barrels of the binos. So that I wouldn't be waisting a bunch of time switching things out. Worked well. But I didn't take the shot, so not sure how the rifle barrel might rub and scratch on the Binos barrels if I took the shot. But it did work well for steadying the 300yd shot no problem.
