This year Ruger released the short-barreled stainless Hawkeye Hunter in .358 Winchester, and it’s exactly the rifle I’ve always wanted. It seems perfectly suited for the type of hunting I do—thick timber in snow and rain.
I’m posting in the hopes that someone here has purchased one and tested it with different ammunition/loads. My biggest concern is how much velocity is lost with the 16-inch barrel and whether it has affected terminal performance or accuracy.
Also, I’m a left-handed shooter and I’m a little concerned about the Mauser-style three-position safety. For any lefties who own one, has it been an issue in the field, or is it something you get used to quickly?
I’d really appreciate hearing any firsthand experiences with this rifle.
