Anyone regret going from 3500/2500 series to a 1500 series?

The smaller the better for me, I am the polar opposite of most here… I feel like I’m getting punished when I have to drive the tundra… I like small pickups, and any full size sucks in the mountains around here. If I ever buy a one ton or 3/4 ton, it will only be used when needed… ride quality sucks off road, won’t fit down a lot of little brush choked roads, and getting them turned around in tight quarters sucks.

If I was hauling a lot and on pavement, I wouldn’t mind it, but anything else, I don’t even want a half ton… I much prefer midsize pickups for a long list of reasons

I like small and nimble, fun to drive and maneuverable with a good ride off the pavement. I drive a couple different one tons of family members occasionally and there is nothing desirable about them to me.

If it wasn’t for my bigger boat, I wouldn’t own our tundra, but at least my wife likes driving it

If I was regularly hauling over 8k, I’d skip the half ton, but wouldn’t drive it much

I almost bought a Tundra until I figured out you can't pull a fifth wheel with them. I was maaaaddd. 😠

Had my heart set on that truck.
Mine is the older gen (2020) with the V8. It just feels like a quality vehicle, hard to explain. I traded a 2018 tundra for a 2020 Cummins. Before that I had an F350, Ram1500, and F150. I have bounced around a lot. I have also spent a ton of time driving and towing with my buddies 2023 Duramax AT4. I don’t have any regrets with my Tundra - best truck decision I have made in a long time.

I sort of split the difference. I have 2022 Gas 7.3 F250 with the Tremor pack. Did a 3 inch Carli lift/king shocks with slightly softer Deaver rear springs. Rides much better than stock and the 7.3 with the 4.30 gearing in the tremor is still perfect with 37s. Went to this from a raptor as I wanted off road capabilities and to still be able to haul more hunting gear and not ‘bro out’ and high beam everyone with just 5/600 pounds in the bed. Next add is the 58 gallon tank they just released for the gas superduty trucks to be able to stay in the woods longer.
I have a 21 7.3 Tremor...the 58 gallon tank should be a factory option. It was 1st upgrade I did. I was on a waiting list for a while. Came in end of Dec got installed in Jan, it's great.

My 23 f150 crushes the interior size compared to my 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen Cummins. Love having diesel power but wasn’t needed. These ecoboost make crazy power and the ride is great. Unless I need to pull over 15-20k on a regular I won’t ever go back to 3/4 ton. These new 1/2 tons pull 10-12k all day long.

Ram REALLY needs to get with the program and update their cab to the same as the 1500 series. And while they are at it get rid of the dinky 6’-4” short bed and go to a 6’-10” bed like the other manufacturers. This is coming from a current RAM 2500 owner.

That said, NO WAY would I ever hook 10-12k to a 1/2 ton truck. My Ram is a 2012 model and it’s tow rating is 12,600# and that’s all the suspension/frame wants to handle. I can’t imagine what it would be like hooking that kind of weight to a 1/2 ton.

Saw a Tundra and a 1500 GMC pulling fifth wheels in our canpground this weekend. Crazy.
I see that all the time on the highway. Some of these trucks rear bumpers aren't far off the ground and the actual looks alone should scare folks away from doing that......but you still see it happening. That's the same mentality as "well, I still have checks in my checkbook so I must be OK".

Drove around in a coworkers 2024 high country 3500 duramax today. It had all the goodies. Awesome truck. Rode like they forget to put shocks on it. My tundra rides like a Cadillac compared to that thing!

You saying he's lying about the weight? I towed more than that by a good bit with my 2014 Ecoboost, which was even less powerful than the new ones. Never had any problems getting going, or stopping.

No, I'm saying he didn't show how to properly figure tongue weight which is incredibly important and would have been beneficial to people. Instead I listened to him wax poetic about his truck for ten minutes.

In the early 90's we were using half ton Fords and Chevys to haul car trailers full of roofing tear-off out of the Dallas metroplex. I'm fully aware that half ton trucks can and will carry a load, then and now.

Why not keep the diesel and add a gas motored truck? I own a 3/4 ton and a 1/2 ton. I like them both. And use them accordingly. Best of both worlds.

Modern half tons, properly equipped, are far more capable than the 3/4 tons of yesterday year. Think back to 1997 ish, no one thought twice about pulling 10k+ with an F250 power stroke. Today's F150s have stronger frames, bigger brakes, and more HP and torque than that older diesel.
I’ve got a 2006 powerstroke diesel. The motor has been gone through and built to be dependable. It had a few tweaks like increasing airflow and some valve work. But, it’s running a “stock” tune to match the specs. So, it’s a puppy dog compared to the power it could have. Yet, it is no comparison between it and a new gasser. Yes, gas motors have come a long ways on power and pulling. But, they pale in comparison to any diesel made in the last 25 years when it comes to actual pulling power.



With that said, the brake pads on my newer half ton are bigger than the brake pads on my older diesel. Times are a changing. The auto makers are definitely making better vehicles. They are better built, stronger, and fit multiple needs that the average family requires. These new trucks are awesome. They’ll last a long time.


It’s funny though to read how many people trade regularly though. In a time when vehicles are being made to last a very long time. The auto makers listened and built what consumers wanted. And consumers no longer seem to want a vehicle to last for three decades.
