Anyone in NorCal doing Elk in Cali?

I have the maximum points in CA and don't anticipate drawing that tag. I have drawn tags in NM and Wyoming which are very difficult for Non Residents to draw but a California Tule tag even for a resident is makes those tags look easy......

Relatively speaking, this will be a good year to get drawn for an elk tag. CDFW has added a number of tags, especially in and around Owen’s Valley. I believe they’ve also added quite a few Grizzly Island tags. I’m told populations are above management objectives and they’re trying to reduce population as well as take some ‘management’ bulls.

It is a good stop with the family. They have a breeding pen that you can drive around, once the pen is at capacity, they move the elk onto hunt areas throughout the state. San Luis reservoir is across I5, from the refuge.

I know i will never get the tag unless its the Powerball lotto kind of win, i only have 4 or 5 points i don't even remember. But I've seen some nice bulls up where i deer hunt, just road hunting. They are Roosevelts i think? I'm not an elk hunter but they look big to me. Saw a 6x6, 5x5 and 4x4 all in the same area, with cows.

Anecdotally, while CA is really hard to draw in, elk numbers are obviously increasing, and the herds are clearly expanding out. I am cautiously optimistic that we will see more elk opportunity in California.

In the past few years, I heard elk in Calistoga and in Jackson Demonstration State Forest (Fort Bragg). Both of those locations are fairly easily connected by deep woods to the Ukiah area. Neither of those areas are considered to have elk today.

There are a handful of elk in Sonoma county, that have been there for close to a decade. One of the bulls hangs out on my buddy’s ranch and leaves during mating season. Trump is trying to expand hunting on some of the national parks and Point Reyes is on that list. Opportunities keep popping up with new hunt areas.

I watch the wolf tracker...so far it has been in Tehatchpi, Tejon Ranch and last week was along the 395 where there are winter ranges of elk (my dad saw 2 cows where there is typically 40-60 head) and currently up at Horseshoe Meadow just south of Mt Whitney.

The wolf found the elk on the Southern part of the state.
