I was considering becoming a member of Huntin Fool. They are doing a membership drive and if someone refers me to sign up you get additional raffle tickets to win a guided hunt.
Is the membership worth it for $100 ? I think I would like the print magazine, and I am sure that I could use all the help/information provided on where to put in for tags GMUs etc.
If this is not appropriate to post then my apologies and moderators please feel free to delete.
Thanks.

If your playing the points game, it's defiantly worth it. I was a member for a long time when I was applying in multiple states. I have kept a years worth of magazines just for reference and was just looking to see what they say about Idaho goat the other day. They do steer traffic and affect the odds, so it's also helpful in that sense too.

I would agree with Rizzy. I am still a member and would be glad to have any new member use me as their referral person:). Consider it a resource, especially if you are applying in multiple states and playing the point game. Sometimes, it is nice to know which unit to apply for or to avoid (either due to quality or draw opportunity).

Hey guys,

My friends and I were just discussing Hunting Fool vs Eastmans' on the last shed hunting trip.

So my question to you guys (this will help resolve the debate) is why you would choose Hunting Fool over Easmtans MRS or Eastmans over Hunting Fool.

What say you????!!!!

I like both. I think when you compare their info together it gives you an even better idea of good areas, and the sleeper areas. I will say though, I get tired of all the raffles Huntin fool has, and are trying to get you to spend money. It gets annoying.

I choose Eastmans over hunting fool based on price. I have looked at friends hunting fool to compare. I feel the information provided on units in different states is a good starting point but I feel neither is perfect. I guess I have not seen enough difference to justify the extra money for hunting fool. I also enjoy the EHJ and EBHJ better. Just my opinion.

Aron: I'm have not subscribed the Eastmans so I can't compare. All of these services are a resource if you are doing the applications yourself. Can you do without, yes but you will need friends in the right places or a lot of time. Short of someone get both for several years and comparing the differences, if any, it would be hard to evaluate. Also, it would depend on what you are looking for: draw odds, game quality, due dates, success rates, public vs private lands, etc. What I am looking for may be of little value to someone else. Short of a spread sheet to objectively evaluate the difference, it would be tough to just say one is better than another.

I think HF provides more detail. I do think its worth it for its easy of info. I would love for someone to use me for the referral! I do think you could get the subscription every few years or so and probably not miss a beat. But I like the up to date info and the stories. They have used one of my stories in print and one on line, of the two I have sent.
I kind of got sick of hearing DIY from Eastmans when they pay for outfitters, big money for private etc. Like his huge KS mule deer that when he got there to hunt they showed him the pics and he called home to dad and asked if he could pay the $10,000 to shoot it. Don't get me wrong if they have the money and resources to be able to do it I am all for it just don't keep saying DIY

Personally I found little value in my Huntin Fool membership - and it's not cheap either. I didn't really gain any additional info with HF that I hadn't already found in my own research or with the info available through Eastmans.

I originally didn't know about Eastmans when I joined huntin fool back in 2008 ish.
IIRC, huntinfool sent me a complimentary issue, I liked it and joined. I think they got my info from my western hunter subscription.

At this point, for the money I would rather just buy the B&C records books.

I subscribe to both Eastman's and HF. If you are looking to draw a tag and go guided then HF is a good resource as they will recommend proven guides and provide phone numbers of past members who used the guides and/or drew the tag. (So long as the member authorizes it) Eastman's is a more grounded publication IMO and I feel they help point you in the correct direction to draw the tags, but once you do the backside info they provide is limited.

I enjoy both, but find myself enjoying Eastman's as it focuses more on the DIY type of hunts. If I was going for a Super Slam HF would be a more valuable resource IMO.

If you want to read hunting stories, toss a coin. If you want accurate info on how draws really work and accurate odds look elsewhere, neither they or that "subscription service" are any good in that respect.

I use Eastmans mainly to guide me in a certain direction. I am too old with too few pref. points to wait to draw a premiere tag. I like the DIY aspect of it too. I am not a trophy hunter though. I got into the western state hunting a little too late in life to get very fussy about antler size. I think you can end up in no mans land on pref. points too. You have more than enough needed for a descent unit and will probably never have enough for a high end unit. Just my two cents, may not be worth even that:)

I subscribe to both and they both have a lot of good information I think HF breaks down the draw proses of the states a little better but as far as draw odds and unit info they're pretty close huntin fool does have some good tools on there site that you get with the membership

Huntin Fool makes their money by telling you the odds on state draw tags, HOWEVER, they can't seem to publish the odds of their own raffles! Am I the only one that finds this absurd? Why can't they publish the odds of their own raffles? Unbelievable! Should be illegal when you think about it!

HF over Eastmans for one reason alone... The list of prior tag holders for that area. Being able to call those guys and get specific info is worth the $100 in itself if you ask me. The draw info with odds and recommendations is all fine and good but you can get similar info elsewhere, like Eastmans, for less. I also already know where I want to apply in most states. But access to the network of previous tag holders in a particular unit is what makes the deal to me.
