Anybody rucking?

I'm convinced after miles of rucking,, even with my killer Seek setup, that the minute you throw 50 lbs in a pack that shit is going to kill your neck shoulders..

Are you comfortable at 45 lbs and 50 is just the number that pushes it over the edge?

May be worth tweaking your set up some. 50 lbs is nothing to dismiss but still a reasonable weight that in my opinion you should be able to carry without a ton of discomfort. That being said, everyone’s a little different in that regard.

I ruck all year long, couple times a week. 30-50# just depending on how I’m feeling that day/how my training has been for the week. If your pack fits you properly, you shouldn’t have any pain. Especially at 50#. If it hurts then, it’s really going to hurt after you haul out a few quarters over rugged terrain that weigh 75 pounds a piece.

If someone can WALK with a 50# pack at a 4.5 MPH pace, they’re a specimen. Somewhere between 3 and 4 MPH is a very good pace in easy terrain.

I was doing it last summer. Every morning before work I would do 2 miles with 40 lbs on my back. It sucked at first. But I think it really helped me get my pack adjusted because after about two week I only noticed the weight going uphill. It is a nice workout.

50lbs to start at a body weight of 135 is a pretty ambitious start. I would have been surprised if your back wasn’t sore.

@jarrettd, how is the back today?

Like others have said, watch a video on fitting your pack, and how to shift weight from your shoulders to hips. It took me a while to adjust my pack properly and learn how to shift the weight around. I would also get the weight out of the very bottom of the pack. I throw an old blanket in the bottom of my pack and add my weight on top of that.

I agree. I'm not familiar with the Seek packs. But even at near 100 pounds my back and shoulders are not sore. It's not like it's sup3r comfortable but at least it doesn't suck.

I will sometimes get bruising on my upper tail bone area, but that varies with the clothing I have on.

I swear for me it also depends where the weight is. I ise a 50lb gravel bag. If ots in the bottom i get weird rubbing and soreness on my lower back. If i put a blanket at the bottom to get the weight in the middle that issue completely goes away. And pack fits obviuosly huge part of that to.

I blew my back out really bad about 3 weeks ago. It took muscle relaxers and a steroid to get me back on my feet. I'm still not right tho and afraid to start. We have warm weather and just before I got hurt I was in the gym every morning at 5am. Since the injury I have been to the gym maybe 3 times and one of those times my back hurt bad enough that I left.

I want to start rucking as it's the best training for mountain hunting. I hope I'm better soon. Been stretching every single day trying to get back to normal.

I ruck 3x week. Started with 30, now I’m at 45lb. I use a GoRuck rucksack. The straps are very wide and distribute the weight over a larger area than thin shoulder straps. GoRuck rucksacks are bombproof, but there is no suspension system. I do hill repeats and trails. It’s a great workout.

Yeah guys, I've rucked out some pretty heavy loads always kind of the same tension in the base of the neck area, I do deal with neck pain frequent headaches too. But all said it could be some load issues or fitment tweaking. The lighter loads are a breeze, usually just ruck that way and make the workout a little more intense with hill running, frog squats etc

I do it year round. Its great to dial your stuff in, see what's good and to see what needs to be tweaked or changed. I think more people need to spend time with their gear anyway.

Is there a backstory or reason behind the GoRuck pack not having any suspension? Always scratched my head about it.

Just take it slow. Start spring with 2 miles then 4, 6, 8. By the fall hunts your grinnin.

Get a comfortable pack. Realistically not much is going to make you feel good when you pack an animal out. Over 70lbs is usually guna suck no matter what. It’s all mental.

That being said a comfortable pack fit to you, will make the pain onset a little damper. I am a big stone glacier fan but everyone has their favorite. Keep the weight on the hips but not free moving up top. I wouldn’t start with 50 if your new to it. 25-35 is the training range.

Closer to season I’ll do 6-8 milers with 60-70, so carrying my camp on my back is nothing at like 50.

Thanks for asking. My back and shoulders are good. No issues there. Quads were a little sore but no different than a normal leg day. One weird think is I have shin splint pain. Probably more boot related…. Crispi Nevada with miracle gray insoles. Also the trail was pavement.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. This was my first experience on rockslide and it was a good one. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I’m gonna try to get a bag of something that’s 30lbs and adjust my pack to put more weight on the hips.

My guess is it is because it is designed to be a workout not designed for comfort.

I ended up getting a big lower back pad with the stone glacier. Changed rucking forever.
