BC guy here, potentially thinkin about makin the move to the Yukon.

Had a couple questions, from what I understand very lttle Goat population all LEH, Mule Deer and Elk are LEH. Blacktailed Deer, Bison, Moose, Caribou and Dall Sheep are all GOS?

Was also wondering how I attain guiding certification? I have my BC guiding license, though im not sure if it is transferrable to the Yukon, could not get an answer from the Yukon government about that or how to attain Yukons guiding certification.

Much work for millwrights/welders up that way?

Thanks to anyone who reaches out, I can not PM yet but should be able to soon if youd rather talk that way.

we can talk here.

goat is not only on PHA (draw) but there are only few places mostly along NWT mountains (Nahanni). very isolated and far from civilization. and you re right the rest is on draw and after 14 years of applying still not but only 3 tags a year.

we are hunting moose where goats are present in our fly out but very challenging to reach ...

all deer including blacktails are on draw (PHA) only, elk the same. none after 14 years of applying on draw,.

bison, moose, sheep (dall and fannin), black and grizzly bears, caribous are mostly over the counter but for some areas moose and caribou can be get on PHA (draw) as well if closer to whitehorse.

we have the right of one grizzly every three year. and 2 black bears a year.

now for guiding i do not know the requirement for guiding in BC but here you will work for an outfitter that will apply for you as an assistant-guide or guide permit to operate for them. at the end of the season and for each hunt you will have to submit an hunting report that the outfitter will compile and provide to Yukon env.

some will require a current wilderness certificate first aid and also mountaineering experiences and some just the regular st john/red cross first aid first level, some will look first for wranglers then you will become assistant-guide then guide ... you will have to find your way on guiding and deciding who worth your sweat ...

so it will depend if an outfitter needs/wants you. recently most are avoiding to hire/use local guides.

i must add do not forget the one year probation before being a resident for hunting. you will be considered non resident for a year (12 months)

Thanks alot for the replies man really appreciate it! Some good info I didn't know

Sounds very much like the states. Lower 48 vs Alaska. I packed ‘er up and moved to Alaska 5 years ago. My biggest regret is I didn’t do it sooner. Buddy is right, a Dall sheep hunt in AK is 35,000 USD minimum and I did mine on an over the counter/harvest ticket we call it.

I consider myself an honorary Canadian. My fiancé lives in Northern, AB, near the territories. My daughter was born there as well. I’ve made the trek through the Yukon more then I wish through all the seasons. Haven’t gotten the opportunity to hunt their YET. But I’m not big into guided hunts so idk if I ever will. Never say never!

Take the leap of faith man! Follow your heart. It’s scary, I know. Make a plan and give it “X” amount of years. You can always retreat back to BC and familiar ground.

Hahah yeah that's a good way of putting it. Coming to be the last frontier for guys like me I think the far Northern country. Right on man good on ya! That's another place I am looking at is the Peace region or BC or Alberta maybe do a stepping stone to BCs peace then move on from there.

I will miss Blacktails, become quite the fanatic the little bastards are keeping me down here lol. That and nice fir ponderosa pine ridges of the interior down here. Like you said though can always come back down, even to hunt get a permit and I can hunt deer with the old man or a buddy.

Just a heads up the Yukon is mainly a liberal state…. I looked into it heavily. The liberals and 700k for a mediocre house drove me away

The Yukon is calling.

Best way to turn a $100,000 sheep hunt into a OTC tag.

Just have to endure -40c weather and insane housing prices and soon to be gun control.

Current weather…

what about Alaska, not cold enough lol but i can guarantee it is a great place to live but it is not everybody and certainly not for you. winters are known to be cold and preserve us from a lot of people that think how summers are nice but do not think about winter ... after over 16 years here you will not find me in another place and i cutted my wood for heat by -35c ...

edited: i might add the -40c is everywhere in northern part of canada not specific to the Yukon but it is a surprise you discovered yourself that winters can be cold in that part of the world lol

Thanks for quickly judging. I am in northern bc. Same weather as the Yukon.

And yes the conservatives just got in. That does not mean there is not a large group of liberals still present who are actively pushing for gun Controle.

I mentioned the winters because not many can handle a average high of -22c

you can always claim that bd is better on everything thus the reason you are still there and why im in the Yukon there is room to build your life where you can and want.

gun control is all across canada and yukon was the one with the most restricted guns per capita ... now for the liberals if i were you i would look over my shoulders as your province is way more liberal ...

but liberals are all across canada in big number but i will tell you something your neighbour can be a liberal or even a dipper and will you stop to talk to him? me, not ... we all need each other one day or another. unless you want to be only with people like you it will be always the case than some people will not think like you ...

for the weather it is hilarious thinking you are from northern bc weather really similar ...

now for the house pricing i can guarantee as of today you wont get anything from $700k but i do not think it is different in any part of canada in the mountain ...
