Any Rok Slide chess players out there? You can find me with the same username on Chess.com. I've been playing since sometime late winter/early spring this year. 1 minute games during boring meetings. 5 minute games when I got 10 minutes to kill and so on.

Holler at me if you want to reveal to me my lack of abilities.

I played quite a bit this time last year for a couple of months. Highly enjoyable. I mostly play the computer opponents though anybody with an eastern European type of username usually beats me like a drum in an embarrassingly lopsided game.

I used to be a competitive player in high school. I just didn't have the discipline to put in the studying and memorization to take it to the next level.

I've taught my kids and used to volunteer teaching a class at their elementary school. It's a great game.

I was in chess club in the 6th grade!
I like chess, I am horrible at it.

Two things stick out about chess to me:
Jr High, 1981, 82ish. Had an English teacher, he played chess with a guy in Russia. They played by mail, sent each other Polaroid pics of their moves and a handwritten letter with the moves and general how's life.
He would show the class the letters. To me that's the coolest thing ever. No internet, the home PC was literally in infancy. Two guys, writing letters, respect, honesty. This has always stuck with me still at 57

Went to Nashville few years ago. Obviously, a big homeless population. There was an old black man with a card table and 2 folding chairs, old chess board with a sign that said play me for $5.00. I so bad wanted to play him and take a 5 move beating which I'm sure would have happened. GF wanted to roam around town though. I did see people playing him the few days we were there. Thought it was cool this guy wasn't just shaking a cup around for a handout.

I just started - totally suck. Beat my brother in law on Thanksgiving and felt like a million bucks, forced a draw against my buddies 5th grader and brought back to reality. (Although we played on a lord of the rings board and I couldn't remember what the pieces were). I mostly play on lichess, against the level 3pretty much 50-50. I'm afraid the speed games will make me worse. Any other good ways to get started?

This thread is post season at its finest.

I used to a long time ago - was embarrassed regularly.
I really enjoyed playing backgammon in college. I would play several games with a guy down the hall in my dorm every day after classes. We played for a nickel a game - we kept tally. At the end of the year we had played well over 500 hundred games - I think I owed him like .75 cents.

That is so cool. Maybe life moved at a slower pace back then? Honestly, would love to be a part of something like that.

Ahhh, I think next time I get out to the city I'll find one of those hustlers and let them whoop me. Would be fun.

Played one of my colleagues the other day and my rating is higher. He spanked me three games in a row. haha. I was impressed. Good to let my direct reports win anyways!
