Be careful with firearms if you drive Nacimiento Ferguson road through the base. They allow hunting/firearms on the base but I believe all civilian firearms must be registered with the base as it’s federal land and an active combat training facility. Also DO NOT SPEED through the base. They are sticklers about that. Nice herd of Tule elk on the base that you can see most time when driving through it. If you forego that route and stick to the coast then take hwy 1 north through Monterey and Santa Cruz. Nice spots to see and good seafood restaurants through there. Suggest Phil’s Restaurant in Moss Landing as one of the better ones. The stretch between SantaCruz and Half Moon Bay is really nice as well with tons of spots to pull off and get down to the water. North of SF, Tomales Bay and Drakes Bay is pretty nice but once you get up that way the weather is colder and the ocean gets a lot colder and more wind.

Yikes. The base seems unnecessary to me. I was just planning on seeing if we could camp around Big Sur and I heard that road was popular for it. I will look into other areas. If there isn't something on the base that is an absolute must see, I think we'll just avoid it. Thanks for the heads up.

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to California July 10th. She already took two weeks off a long time ago. Planning on going to Big Sur and just driving up the coast. Since it's just a road trip we're able to wait till the last minute to decide what to do. My question is, is most of California open yet at this point? I've done internet research but there's only so much I can find out. What should I expect if I were to go there today? I'm assuming it will be a little better in a month from now but who knows...

Worst case scenario we go backpacking in Montana again (I'm cool with that).
Just heard that Yosemite is re opening Thursday
A must see !
