Antler Dealer Busted

I used to run a Bait car program for stolen cars, be pretty funny to see a GPS get put in an antler and someone get busted later. I don't' think it's logistically feasible for several reasons but it would make for some good entertainment.

They chip antlers, not GPS but RFID or telemetry (radio). I think the GPS technology that is small enough is way to cost prohibitive.

All they would need is an RFI reader with a camera at the entrance/exit to the area, which isn't too difficult actually. The issue they could run into is just getting the info out. Sometimes there is not reception out in the boonies.

You could just set up an array with a camera pointed at the license plates and reference the time stamp of when the code was scanned. You would prob need a pretty juiced up array to detect inside a vehicle tho. Someone give me 100K for testing purposes.....

You'd only catch the idiots that way tho. Guys like the dude in the article ain't coming out the gate.

Sentence seems a little light for being a repeat offender that was still under probation from his previous crime.

F him. Clearly he's got special rights over everyone else in his own head anyway, maybe some jail time would help his attitude.

Taking away the hunting rights of a person who sneaks on to the National Elk Refuge at night to illegally collect and bury antlers seems ridiculous. Why would he worry about a hunting license? He committed these crimes for money. So punish him with heavy fines.

Felons can still hunt with bows and muzzleloaders. No pity from me.

Unfortunately the fines never seem to "hurt" enough. I don't necessarily think the prison system needs to be clogged with this type of moron. But, a 500k fine may change some of these idiots way of thinking.

Seems like that might do the trick. They don't throw big corporate leaders in jail, they just fine the hell out of them. Thinking they should start fining criminals, and throwing corporate ass holes in jail.

Fines are a joke, the way its setup you never even pay em. Jail time works, like legitimate jail time not some differed sentence. Not 10 days, not 30 days, give em a solid year and see what happens.

Pretty sure I’ve heard of antlers in Yellowstone National Park and on the Elk refuge being chipped, and guys being busted previously. Trust me I remember once glassing about 100 elk sheds out on a flat in Yellowstone and being real tempted

I see your point, but when little issues are ignored, it doesn’t take long before people who have no regard for law start becoming the people committing the major issues.

A lot of municipalities don’t pursue charges against shoplifters and car thieves theses days because they don’t consider those crimes “major”, but I bet if your car was stolen you’d want the thieves caught and punished.

In the scope of wildlife violations, if the repeat offender suffers no consequences for poaching antlers, how long do you think it takes for someone like this to decide that killing a bull elk or moose out of season is for just the antlers is not going to be a big deal either?

Let me get this straight…

Having your car stolen is a big deal, but shooting an animal out of season (poaching) is not?

I may be misunderstanding you, but if I’m not - your comment reinforces every negative stereotype there is about non-resident hunters (especially from the south).

He also lost his hunting privileges for five years and was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution to the Wyoming Fish and Game Department" Additionally, he received a felony charge for violating the lacey act which will negatively affect him for the rest of his life.

Seems pretty harsh for caching antlers, but it is pretty simple to just follow the rules. This is his second time being caught, so almost certainly not his second time illegally caching antlers. So I would say the punishment is fair and hopefully a deterrent to others.

That was for the previous violation, I don't see anything on what or how much his penalty will be on the new one.

Its a hunting forum...logic would dictate that things would be targeted towards hunting related topics/news.

If we focused on every problem, whether considered major or minor in this world, life would really suck. One could argue that people focusing on everything is a big part of the issues we see in the world today.

Yep, you are correct. I need to read a little more carefully, haha. It does seem like the Lacey Act felony charge is connected to this more recent violation and he received 90 days of house arrest, and another 5 years of probation and hunting restriction. I don't see any fines associated with the recent violation. So hopefully more is coming his way because that doesn't seem like enough to deter him from just going and doing it again.
