Just watched a tv show something like Western Hunting wih Chris and Mark Denham. The two of them were Coues hunting in AZ. They set up for a cross canyon shot and edited out the long distance they were shooting at. They take this long range shot and miss this deer by 3 FEET TO THE RIGHT!!!! This is on a tv show for all to watch .The deer walks off. They check out the rifle and scope combination later and find the rifle to be perfectly zeroed. These guys obviously have no clue what they are doing and should not be taking this type of shot if they MISS A DEER BY 3 FEET!!! It looks like these guys make a living off of the monetization of wildlife and promoting long range shooting at wildlife. Just another sickening example of poor ambassadors of the long range shooting fraternity
This is becoming the norm and now everyone thinks it’s ethical to take these Hail Mary shots . This is what is f***** up with the promotion of the inexperienced hunters/shooters promotion of long range shooting. How many of you have missed a deer by 3 FEET ?

Sounds like your average Youtube coues hunt. At least the deer got away in this case. Usually its miss by a couple feet, deer is so far away that it doesn't know what's going on, hunter shoots again and kills the deer or wounds it.

nobody here is going to admit to being a LR hunter that missed or wounded. however, we all know it's common. lower your expectations. there is almost never a reason to take LR shots past 500 yards...you can almost always get closer. less "gamesmanship" and more sportsmanship is sorely needed.

I've done that before... On a deer, at 1050. Perfect position, all the time in the world. Slight wind, but consistent, calculated the wind perfectly.

Broke the shot and as I watched trace I realized I didn't hold any wind even after I calculated it. Would have put the shot perfectly. Was probably 2 feet in front of his chest.

What of it?

A 3’ mis followed by a corrected shot that kills the animal is celebrated all over the internet like someone is the coolest dude on the block, with never a mention of animals that were never recovered. There are a number of forums I have no desire to visit again because of it. The whole shot spotting is 95% just an excuse to take pot shots beyond that person’s abilities.

Would of could of should of I've heard that a few times. Not able to get closer. I understand some people just aren't able to get closer so they have to try the hail mary. Carry on.

A lot of people are ignorantly responding to this as a reason "no one should long rang hunt." This is in fact an excellent reason for it. A lot of little things have to all be done correctly to make an accurate shot. Unlike a short range shot were pulling your shot or missing your windage is likely to result in a wounded animal. At these ranges you're more likely to have a complete miss and the animal gets to walk away unscathed. You get an opportunity to correct what you did wrong and the animal doesn't suffer.

It doesn’t sound bad if you say he “only” missed the deer by 3 feet, if you think about it, 3 feet is a pretty small number if you are talking about 1000 yards. I’m not trying to guilt trip you, but it sounds like you owe these gents an apology

I love how guys talk about cleanly missing and never bring up the gut shot animals that aren’t recovered. Slob hunting pure and simple. No better than the guy who doesn’t sight in his gun and misses by 2’ at closer range.

You're missing the point, and the math. At worst bad shots are made at long range at the same rate as they are at short ranges. At short ranges you're going to have more bad shots result in gut shots than at long ranges by at least an order of magnitude. Therefore, short range hunting is going to result in more gut shots than long range hunting assuming that short range and long range shots are taken at the same rate. We know the overwhelming number of shots by hunters are taken at short range. Therefore we should expect that short range hunting results in exponentially more gut shots.

I wonder how many archers sail them over the back at 40 and under the belly at 60… some of you guys are judgey as hell. I’ve seen way more close range wounding and missing than on the LR stuff. Don’t watch dumb shit on tv, problem solved.

Western Hunter is not a long range show in general. They seem to share the true highs and lows of a hunt. Funny that people criticize a show for showing what actually occurred during the hunt. I haven’t seen this episode but generally these guys do a darn good fair chase hunt that doesn’t always end in an animal being taken. You never see them with outfitters and are mainly DIY guys.

Yeah, lots of judgmental world-class hunters on here that never miss.

I talked to seven dudes this year that "stuck" bulls but never found them.. I hear these stories every damn year. A bad shot is a bad shot, no matter the distance.

A friend of mine pulled this out of the backstrap of a bull he killed a few days ago with a rifle.

Exactly. I’ve always said hunters will kill hunting. So much ego about my way is the best and swiftness to condemn other legal methods as un ethical is fascinating.

To me "The Western Hunter" with Chris Denham and Nate Simmons is the best hunting show on TV. Buzzy's description is spot on. It is possible the pressure of making an episode clouded judgment and led to a shot longer than should have been taken. From the OP's description it sounds like the miss was a surprise and they did the appropriate troubleshooting following the miss. Long or short, sometimes we make bad shots, but on this show they normally don't take bad shots and go without taking game in an episode rather than pushing the envelope.

I think there’s a lot of bad shooting no matter what the range is. Personally the worst experience I had with an elk was at 20 yards in the timber with a rifle on an off hand shot. Ended up killing the bull, but I was close to running out of ammo when it was all said and done, not proud of it. Since then I’ve put in a lot more time shooting and gone to a lighter caliber so I don’t have a horrible flinch.

When it comes to Archery anymore, I’m starting to get turned off. I hear of more bulls every year getting crippled and lost than actually killed. Nobody thinks twice about the guy who says I was shooting at an elk at 40 yds and hit a branch and missed the bull by 3’. In all honesty what’s the difference between that and I was shooting at 800 yds and mis judged the wind. I’m personally not sure and not sure either is a good look for hunters. I think at the end of the day everyone should know their limits, which sadly very few people do.
