I have an android that is not being used, it has no data plan, I was wondering if I could use Wifi, buy onx app and save the maps, then when in the field use the android as a gps. they say you do not need cell service to use the app. I want to make sure im not missing something.

Additional info: I have an old flip phone and do not want to switch to a data plan, I also dont have a GPS, was thinking of getting an etrex 20 175.00 and the chip 100.00 but thought this might be a decent way to avoid that and save some money this first year.

Any input would be great.

It will work... as long as you are on Wi-Fi and save the maps to the device it's no different than when you are going off grid and you have no cell service. I do the same thing with my tablet.

yes, any smartphone that doesn't have service will basically become an ipod. It just needs to have a non working sim card in it. You can still make emergency calls with it too ( like 911, not call your buddies to help pack out)

Save the money and buy a back up battery for the phone. Most mid to high end androids have a very accurate gps.

Go into onX settings and use offline mode that way its not trying to find data service. That was a lifesaver when I was in a bad service area, it kept freezing looking for data signal.
