Recently cut short a backcountry solo hunting trip. Never in a gazillion years would i have ever guessed it would have been because of coming down with shingles.....they ain't no joke, still recovering.
And one thing I learned is that one should know how to activate their SOS device without being able to see. I was able to hike out but it's worth thinking about.

Sorry about that ...

PSA .. just a reminder for everyone else that there is a Shingles Vaccine. Yep, I got it, but after I had Shingles the second time (you can get it more than once).

My pain was enough to get my wife to go get the two shots (Shingrix). She hates shots.

Wow brother that looks extremely painful. Great friend of mine had it and said he felt like he was on fire being stabbed over and over again. The shingles vaccine is the only vaccine I've ever had, because of what my buddy went through. He is definitely not someone to complain either. Heal quickly!!

I got hit on my cow elk hunt 5 years back, sucks for sure. You got it worse having by your eyes. Ouch brother. Get well soon. mine was on the torso lasted about 1-1/2 weeks. Did not have alot of pain, being on Gabapentin for a failed back surgery years ago. It helped a bunch according to the Doc.

I'm sure shingles anywhere around your face/eyes is about as bad as it could get. I had it two years ago, but mine was a 3" band from my sternum, across one pec, under my right arm, and all the way around my back to my spine. Compared to my normal 24/7 back pain I didn't think it was that bad. But the face and eyes.....no thanks. Hope you heal up quick. Mine took about 5 weeks to clear.

Thats about as bad as Shingles can be, gets into your eye can follow the nerve into the brain. Blind or dead. On Acyclovir?
Had chest wall shingles for 5 weeks in Sept and Oct, started out as abd pain, thought gallstone or pancreatitis, went to the ED, neg ct, dont know whats wrong see your primary care doc. Got the rash 3 days later. Treated with 2 cycles of Acyclovir and 2 cycles of burst and taper steroids. Only pain relief was on day 2 and 3 of the steroids, Pain is neuropathic and unresponsive to narcotics so they use gabapentin which I wont take.

My Dad had them ~25 years ago.

He was one of the toughest guys I knew (Korean War Combat Vet[USMC], Purple Heart, orphan at 13, OTR truck driver who might have taken five sick days in his career, could fix almost anything long before YT and Goofgle) and Shingles literally brought him to his knees and made his life hell for a few weeks.

Once I heard there was a vax for it and was 50 (I think that was the age), and remembered what my Dad went through, I said sign me the heck for that vax cuz I am a pure wuss compared to to my Dad.

Here's hoping for a quick recovery for @mtnwrunner .

So far I haven't had what I would consider bad pain. It's just very tender and sore plus a constant headache. Its been just over a week. The purpose of my post was to let you all know that it is possible in the backcountry to lose your vision so one needs to be able to summit help without being able to see.
And get the vaccine cause this shit is the real deal. This photo was taken 10 minutes ago and it's where I'm at now.
