The level of dishonesty in this thread is appalling.

After the Mike Lee debacle last year, I’m continually reminded that the lowest common denominator, in the midst of all the infighting and disagreements on how this land should be used for that and that land for this, at the end of the day the biggest win for public lands is that they haven’t been sold and are still here for us to discuss.

Off to a win for the new year…not bad. About time though.

I wouldn’t count on AP getting much more land anytime soon. They were outbidding the locals on estate sales and the sellers couldn’t back out because of the commission fees. They are going to private auctions now so the sellers can sell to their neighbors and lease holders. They still get top dollar for their land and the lease holders can continue to keep their grazing leases in their portfolio. Like I said before, the local ranchers/farmers look out for each other and determine their own economy as it has been and will continue to be.

This sounds a little like welfare to me

Some areas up there are in need of restoration but it is acres per cow, not cows per acre. Some ranches might lease some land to two or three of the neighbors. People out East can’t get their arms around the concept of open range with cattle that might have three or four different brands. The local ranchers determine their own economy and help each other out. I live in the middle of 50K of open range. The fence around my place is to keep cattle out. If you took a million acres from us, our regional economy maybe the entire state economy would collapse. There is no way on God’s great green earth could we graze bison and survive

According to Beth Saboe, senior external relations manager with the American Prairie Reserve, the owner of Blue Ridge ranch contacted the organization a few months ago about selling the property.

The group purchased Anchor Ranch, formerly owned by Texas billionaires the Wilks Brothers. It was listed for about $36 million. American Prairie declined to disclose the purchase price.

The organization was working with landholder Dusty Schwenke to acquire the parcel before he unexpectedly passed away last month, American Prairie said. It worked with Schwenke’s family in the past, continued the acquisition process with his estate and finalized the purchase “in accordance with Dusty’s wishes,” American Prairie said.

This isn’t just about AP or Montana. It’s about all of the Western states that graze cattle. Yes I want the FAMILY local cattle ranches to do well so we can hunt there. Montana has quite a bit of public lands, states like South Dakota do not. In South Dakota, 85% of the Deer, Pronghorn and elk hunting is done on family owned cattle ranches that are open to public hunting. In South Dakota over 1.2 million acres are open to public hunting for these species, not just 80K acres.. The ranchers get dollars per acre from the State to open for hunting.

There are oligarchs trying to exploit South Dakota as well. Turner got hold of some prime mule deer land (seems to be his thing these days). Go to Turner Ent. Web in South Dakota. They state that “hunting is Exclusive”.

Now it’s time for me to switch gears to address “Outfitter Welfare” in New Mexico, yet another Socialist idea.
