Killed a pile of elk, deer, antelope, and a sheep with the 178 from 500 and in. Killed everything faster than a 225m from a 300prc and 147m in a 6.5 prc. Always lung shots and just turns everything into soup.

Am I right in the numbers with an average barrel length- impact velocity should be around 1750 at that range?
It should be in the comments, wanna say factory ammo, 22” Tikka or Ruger murican and around 1820 fps impact from recollection? Not sure his elevation etc.

I tried the 178 factory load in my Sako 90 and It didn’t like it, it liked 168 eldm white box match so well it is the chosen one. I would add that to your list. 3 kills to 275 so far with 168 murder and very happy. I don’t think you or the animals will notice a difference in killy factor between x or m so try em both at various weights to find accuracy you want and just kill away. I didn’t want it to like the 178 anyway as I am an eldm hoe.

I cant find white box murder bullets anywhere locally but I got a pile of amax black box on sale for 21.99 a box so I stocked up. If they perform how I hope maybe I'll finally stop thinking about which bullet is right and I'll start thinking more about work

Nah probably not

Man I love me some 308 for an all purpose rifle. I have been using the Hornady American 150 grain Interlock ammo in my M7 for a few years now and it shoots well enough and kills well enough I haven’t even reloaded any ammo for it. I just keep 5-6 boxes of that ammo on hand and it keeps killing stuff.

I did buy several pounds of Varget recently just to have on hand to start loading 7-08 and 308. I’ll stick with 150 or 165 Interlocks for the 308.

We don’t shoot past 300 yards really ever hunting so I don’t feel handicapped with a 308 and a standard duplex reticle.

That bullet produced one of the most gnarly exit wounds at about 350 yards on a doe. Softball sized exit through hide of offside shoulder.

Anybody have experience with 178 eldx on game from a 308?
I recently stumbled into Forms knowledgebase of death using 168 amax and eldm and am kicking around hunting with the amax coming up but because I'm a tinkerer i always have to try new stuff.

In my head the negative reviews I've heard of the eldx are usually high speed impact but since the 308 doesn't run fast in the first place Im wondering if the eldx is a decent solution for 500 yards and in since it is supposed to reliably expand to lower velocities. Unsure exactly what the expansion looks like at those impact velocities and since I bought a metric crap ton of black box amax on sale I should probably stop thinking and go make love to my rifle

I mean wife....

Oh wait 10 months from now is november?, better not. Where is my rifle.....
Not the ELDX, but I used the 178 AMAX in 308 (now ELD-M) in the past. They were by far the most devastating bullet I ever used on game. They are highly fragmenting and liquefy internals. I hit a coyote once in the chest and the front half of it was just...missing. Small bits everywhere. I never saw anything like that before and that was a 20" 308 with modest velocity.

155gr Scenar is the answer.
This was the first match bullet I used for hunting after a recommendation from a user Scenarshooter on another forum 10+ years ago now. It was the match bullet I used in comps so I figured why not try it. First red deer I hit it just solidly poleaxed. I stopped using hunting bullets after that and just stuck to match bullets. I was getting about 2800fps out of a 20" barrel with it.

If only the 178gr AMAX was still made. The difference in the ogive and tip on the ELD-M dramatically changed that bullets behavior.

The 168gr AMAX is near tailor made for the 308- very good bullet. The 178gr ELD-X is also good from contact to 1,800’ish FPS.

2800 from a 20" is what I am getting as well. Turkey to Axis deer are bang flops. Great bullet for the .308!

Whats really interesting to me is that I was hell bent on needing a 7 rem mag, 7 prc or 300 win mag for my next rifle elk trip and then I got into the weeds on bullets and realized that for 99% of all the shots I would be capable of making, I wouldnt need a magnum rifle if I selected a proper bullet and made a shot selection based on that bullet.

I started shooting my 308 a ton and I fell back in love with the rifle. Its not the best rifle, but its mine and I shoot it pretty dang well for what I'm capable of. Given the low cost of ammo I can shoot it a ton to practice recoil management and learning my rifle better. Now I'm excited to use it with a new bullet option and I can't wait to have a chance to see how they perform. I've got steel hung up on my property at various distances and I have been practicing shooting off a pack, bipod, shooting sticks, and trying to get as much real world practice as I can.

Its been really fricken fun to shoot in the wind and see what that does to my bullet impact at the farther distances that I'm able to shoot at home.
