All things .308 Win

Good looking rifles @Formidilosus ! šŸ˜‰Thank you for indulging me (us).

I should have guessed you would suggest some combination of Tikka T3x Lite/ MRC Marshall and SWFA/ Maven, etc. I think I got my wires crossed about setup for a bombproof 308 from Post #1,738 from "The Shoot2Hunt Podcast" thread when you were suggesting a heavier 12-13 pounds as an optimal overall weight. What I didn't pickup on was that your recommendation was based on a member asking about setup for an unsuppresed/unbraked 308.

I was wondering how you would get to that heavier weight, given your normal suggestions, since my T3x/SWFA/Rokstok/suppressor comes in under 10 pounds. I was thinking I would have to go with a heavier barrel and stock combination like a T3x CTR and KRG Bravo for my do-all 308. But I would personally hate to carry a 12-13 pound rifle all day, and prefer your above suggestions for any rifle I plan to carry very far. Fortunately, I live in a state that allows my suppressors!

Oh yeah. The heavier rifles are for if unsuppressed. I prefer a 8.5-10lb setup for my uses with a 308.

The current and hopefully "bombproof" setup I will be experimenting with is a Mauser M12 Impact in 308 Win. with a 20" barrel. I have a Trijicon Credo 3-9x40mm scope mounted via EGW rings and Burris 2-piece picatinny bases. It's crowned with an AB A-10 7.62 suppressor. The whole package comes in around 8lbs 15oz.

@Formidilosus ...do you have any experience with the Mauser M12?

45.6 gr Varget, Nosler 165 BT, Win Brass and a CCI 200 will shoot one hole groups. I have the same gun and it shoots with any custom.

Thank you for that...I'll "give it a shot"!

My brother also has an M12. His rifle stacks them in there with cheap Norma Whitetail (150gr). Unfortunately, I had some difficulties when I had my rifle out. Nothing was grouping for me. I need to take it apart, make sure the stock and barrel aren't touching, the lug is seating properly and everything is torqued together properly. I don't think it was the scope and I'm comfortable with my mounting process. But if I still have problems, I will be switching to one of my SWFAs before another trip to the range.

My kid bought a new Tikka laminate stainless threaded 308 last week and wanted to try the new Burris Fullfield illuminated 2.5-10. Mounted it up tonight in some Hawkins Featherweights and it only sits at 7 1/2 pounds. Should be a sweet setup.

As it seems that your skill set, knowledge and training allows you to use sub 10-pound setups in 308 Win out to it's effective range and beyond, do you ever feel the need to use a heavier rifle chambered in 308 Win?

I'm kind of a "light is right" guy and prefer to keep my setups under 10 pounds. But I've found myself cycling through Tikka CTRs and a Varmint, then eyeballing something like a Sako TRG šŸ˜‰. I can't help but think that there is no practical "need" for a heavier rifle in most circumstances. I suppose it's just a "want" for me with no pragmatic application unless I was competing, trying to split hairs on a range or sitting in a static position likely doing something I wouldn't be doing in civilian status.

Mine would not group when I got it. 4" groups @ 100 yards. I reached out to Mauser (Blaser Group) and they told me the torque specs for the stock is 53 in-lbs. Once I torqued the two stock screws, it all came together.

Excellent information...I will try torquing it properly 1st.

Yes. If the weight is manageable for the task, heavier for the most part is better.
