Find a VBRO or airbnb in your unit...probably gonna be cheaper than a hotel room and it won't be target for thieves like a hotel. I have gotten great tips for freezer storage and other needed items from owners as well. Screw big hotel conglomerates that don't give two shits about you and just want your money.

I lived in several large metropolitan cities including Miami and Los Angeles, so I have a pretty good reference point concerning crime. Albuquerque is a mess concerning crime. One of the worst crime rates in the country for a city its size. Most of the smaller towns along the I40 corridor aren’t any better. Do not leave anything in your vehicle even in “good” areas. Google “The Safest and Most Dangerous Places in Albuquerque Metro”. You will bring up a crime map which will help assist you in determining a place to stay.

Rio Rancho is a descent area. It is only a few minutes north of 40. Traffic is super light in Albuquerque compared to most larger cities. So don’t worry about losing time getting caught in traffic. As a landmark you can focus on, pull up the Cottonwood Mall in maps. The general area is pretty good not being far off of 40.

Someone mentioned to stay away from areas with casinos. Some of the travel trailer forums recommend staying in casino parking lots overnight. On the way to SD for a pheasant hunt, I pulled my travel trailer into a Hara's parking lot in Omaha for the night. Called ahead they said sure and told me which parking lot to pull in. They have 24 hour video security and security guards make regular rounds. Some may even have associated hotels on premises. Make a call, check it out.

Take a big chain and padlock. Wrap ir around the steering wheel and then the brake pedal. Make sure it is in plain view. Oh and lock up your spare tire underneath also. I lost one of those in hotel alley off of Coors.

It's hard picking up sarcasm in text, so... someone seriously took the spare from your truck?!

First I've heard of this and I've run high dollar aftermarket wheel/tire spares without locks on my trucks/Jeeps here for about 20 years.

I mean I'm sure it happens, but every week someone also wins the lottery...

After hearing all of this I should just bring a tent and pitch it out in the boonies. If nothing else I'd at least hear 'em coming. :D

I feel for the local police here. It has gotten to the point where the State Police are picking up the overflow because the local police are so overwhelmed. Last month, mid afternoon, I watched 2 state cops respond to a couple of drunks arguing in a parking lot. Really? State Police having to handle stuff like this? Welcome to Albuquerque.
