Antler width legality has always driven me nuts. I guess if I studied it more I could get better. Good for you guys that have become skilled in it.

I hunt any bull areas and shoot the first bull I see. Although one year I went with a buddy in a spike/fork/50/3 brow tine area and shot a 3 brow tine bull.

I’m with you Synd...I hunt an any bull area as well. It is so much more relaxing and productive, especially when hunting primarily for the adventure and that wonderful meat.

I'll do a string for the OP if still interested in learning. I judged a ton of pics online (and still do) to help me learn to make better calls. All these bulls were taken in a 4 brow tine/50"/spike-fork game unit. Brett Bull #1

Brett Bull #7 Gotta get right angle for a spike/fork sometimes, this guy was only 40 yards and I had to put binos on him for a while to determine if they were indeed forks. The velvet coming off his left side made that weird.

Remember, this is also a 4 brow tine area, but glad to know you think a few get a pass based on width;)

None taken at all! We are meat hunters here so we shoot the first legal bulls we see. I posted these because some of them certainly would get you a day in court if they didn't have the brow tines. The others are all about perspective, skull cap pics are harder to judge IMO, but still useful. I'll post the answers in a few minutes, so SPOILER ALERT for you guys not wanting the answers yet, don't scroll down.......

Brett Bull # 1 – 56” on the nose. 4 tines on one side. 3x4

Brett Bull # 2 – 49.5” This is a bull that can get you in trouble for sure as we guessed he was right at 50" but wouldn't have shot him to find out, we took him because he had 5 tines on one side. 3x5

Brett Bull # 3 – almost 45”, 44 7/8” only took him because of 4 tines on one side. 4x2

Brett Bull # 4 – 57” He was a 3x3

Brett Bull # 5 – 59” 4x5

Brett Bull # 6 – 49” on the nose. Another bull that can get you in trouble without the brow tines! 4x5

Brett Bull # 7 – Fork/Fork Best tasting moose I’ve had.

Brett Bull # 8 – 58.5” This bull was old and regressing. Note the skinny palmation but really long tines. From a distance he did not look legal as we couldn’t see palm tine tips that well and his white palms looked really close together as a 40’s moose would. As he came closer out of brush we could see he stretched well past 50”, which mattered as he was only 3x2. Luke and I guessed around 55”, was surprised to see over 58” on the tape.

I was referring to the browtines. Pics can be deceiving, especially with the smaller ones.

Yes we definitely gazed at a few of these for a while and got multiple angles before squeezing off a round. All were pronounced and well passed the 'longer than wide' requirement. Even the tines game can be scary sometimes. here's another look at Bull # 2 for tines reference, I don't really have other angles of the other little guys for better reference.
