Alaska Hunting buddy - Harder to find than a wife

Finding someone who enjoys the same style of hunting as you, someone you can enjoy being around, and someone that'll actually help instead of making the hunt only about themselves is pretty much non existent.

I met a good friend on this forum by sending out a very similar post about 6 years ago. We ended up hunting together DIY moose out of Bethel, Alaska in Unit 18 and both killed very nice moose well over 50 inches in 4 days. We still stay in touch weekly.

Finding a great hunting partner who is committed, hard working, and willing to spend the time and money is much more difficult than setting up dates with attractive women. Probably easier to just pay for a date to go on a premium hunt!

Although I only did 1 remote AK flyout hunt every year or every other year, I had great success for a 15 year period finding partners on here or Hunttalk. The guys I found on here or Hunttalk were better prepared than the childhood friends I knew and took with me on a few hunts, and had better backwoods skills. I thank the Lord for all the good partners I found for my hunts.

You single guys are totally limiting yourselves. Especially if you’re living in Alaska. Just buy a ticket to anywhere in Asia or Eastern Europe that you’re interested in experiencing and go do some sightseeing. I’m married now, but if I had known this when I was younger the winters here would never have been as cold. It’s really as easy as that….

My wife found me and kind of asked me out on our first "date", bar food and an NHL hockey game. That was almost 36 years ago and she still puts up with me. A couple years ago I found a new hunting crew that have embraced me and me with them. It is tough to find like minded hunting folks, no doubt. I may have hunted with my longest, best hunting buddy, my dad, last fall. Going to be sad not hunting with him for the first time in 50+ years.

I have also found that a hunting partners wife can be as much of a problem as the hunting partner by changing his plans at the last minute.

It ain't just Alaska dude! I've hunted with a bunch of buddies, guys I genuinely like outside of hunting...and only 2 of them are dependable, no-nonsense, priorities in line hunting partners I can count on and not get sick of.

Yeah I’ve been here in AK for about 4 years. My good hunting partner came up when I drew a sheep tag, but outside of that it’s difficult to find a replacement when you had a great one. Unfortunately no one at my church hunts how or what I want to hunt.

It is difficult to match hunting styles. And even more difficult to match personal habits. Ended up ditching at least 50% of my old partners due to their drinking habits. I have nothing against someone drinking a few beers or celebrating a kill. But when they become a nightly drunk it sure gets old quick.
I'm back to being by myself for most hunts again since my son is working full time.
I sprung for a new Yamaha Grizzly and a new Can-Am 6 wheeler ATV plus two aluminum meat wagons then my old partner told me he changed his mind and can't go this September.
