Looking to book a trip to AK this summer to catch some King Salmon. Taking my Father, brother and another kid we have been mentoring the last few years hunting and fishing. Want to get away from the crowds associated with fishing on the Kenai standing shoulder to shoulder. We did a fly-in trip on the Mulchatna River about 15 years ago and the fishing was great so looking at heading back to somewhere on the Mulchatna/Nushagak area again. Anyone have any presonal experiences or recommendations on this sort of a trip in these river drainages? Open to other River systems too that have good fishing and the flyin experiecne with no people. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't have any experience with outfits or guides on the Nush, but as I'm sure you probably already know, it is probably the best (biggest runs), King fishery in the state. Not the biggest fish but many of them. The Naknek out of King Salmon also has a very good king run (typically), but you will probably encounter more folks fishing it as well.

cnelk, thanks for the PM.

Ak Troutbum- yup, thats one of the reasons we want to go back to the Nush, pure numbers! I have emailed a few outfitters I have found so far but have not booked anyting yet. If anyone else has any info, feel free to PM me or post up on here. Thanks!

Togiak river lodge, my buddy owns it, epic fishing, and they're one of 2 on the whole river system.

I've fished the Nush 7-8 times now in three different camps. Toman's and Fins, Feathers & Furs have the nicest boats and both camps are nice. I've fished out of Jake's Alaska a few times and that is where we are going this year. Nice camp, well run, good people, and reasonable.

And they've been having a real winter up there this year, so there should be good permafrost for keeping the beer cold!

Shoot me a message if you want more details.

I would second this. My buddy ran a camp just over the hill on the Nushagak for years but recently sold it and that river just hasn't been as consistent in the last few years but the Togiak would be an incredible trip for you guys.

Two years ago I spent a week at a fly-in camp way up the Mulchatna, Alaska Trophy Safaris. It was a great trip. Good guides, good food (considering where you are.) Caught kings, sockeye, Dolly Vardens, rainbows and grayling. Six days in the river and only saw one other outfit go through, besides the boats at the camp. My only complaint, you are way up the river here. Not many chrome salmon, most are pretty red and that can take quite a bit out of the fight. I saw two 30 lb kings caught back to back. One took about 20 minutes to bring in, the other, less than 5 minutes. Closer to the sea, both would have put up more of a battle.

I fly fished a lot but used tackle as well. I highly recommend them and may go back myself, although I would like to find a place closer to the salt, but then, there will be more people.

This is where we fished when I mentioned in my original post we had done a flyin trip many years ago, great trip for sure. When we were there there was a different owner that run it but I have heard the new owners also run a top notch outfit.

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone and have finalized our trip for this summer. I will report back once we return from the trip.
