Wow, talk about being intentionally abtuse. If you are going to state the obvious at least make it interesting and tell us the cost in dollars.

I don’t see requiring a guide any worse than any of the others . Not sure how you correlate it to wealth in your comment when every animal in NA can be hunted DIY. If anything it’s a poor example due to no consistency between states. You want to see “protectionism” look no further than the medical field and the fact medical bankruptcy is on the rise due actual “protectionism” regulations etc. requiring a guide to shoot an animal isn’t bankrupting anyone or causing undue stress, fear etc.

After reading that, now I wonder if rather than being intentionally obtuse, you may actually find the fact that everything consumes a resource a ground breaking idea.

So I don’t give a f*** if someone cries about the requirement in life to hire a guide for an animal. Not in the top 10,000 problems to worry about in life or even regarding wildlife.

Short answer is no! The AK caribou draw tags are for herds with minimal animals and not ease of access.

That would also be stupid. Guide requirements are nothing but industry protection by the state designed to shift opportunity to the wealthy.

Better, stop having the tax payer save people for free and send bills when a Pave Hawk and PJs pull someone off a mountain.

Edit: I would be a fan of requiring guides to be residents and aligning hunting residence requirements with the PFD.

This would benefit Alaskans more than anything else.

My buddy had the Resurrection tag on the Kenai this fall. After a couple different trips and 12 days in the mountains he saw a total of Zero caribou. And he's no slouch in the hills. The numbers just aren't there anymore.

Ummm, the answer is no. There isn’t really anything to put in for for caribou. There are like 3 draw hunts left for caribou, and you’re not going to draw any of them anyway. Well maybe 23 or whatever went draw for non-residents a few years ago. Another couple years the central arctic herd will succumb to being the only road system hunt left, then we can all just forget that caribou were a thing you could hunt once upon a time.

The pressure on the CAH is increasing rapidly too. Ran the numbers - hunter pressure over the last 5 years (2019-2023) has increased on the road 165% (336 to 890). Airboat hunter numbers up 146%. Boat hunters up 292%. Will be interesting to see how much things jumped up when the 2024 numbers are released by F&G. Would bet the 2024 hunter numbers on the road top 1000.

When you read older posts about that hunt calling it a circus, imagine an extra 500 people running around up there. I doubt these consistent year over year increases are sustainable.

I agree with this….especially after the Nelchina herd was basically wiped out. I know they had some rough winters, but I disagreed with fish and game going nuts and telling people to shoot 2 cows and overissuing tags. Tyler Freel had a good podcast about that with Becky Schwanke who was a former fish and game biologist that explained the numbers used to “estimate” herd numbers those years with the really big harvests were politically motivated. The herd went from almost 50,000 to 8,000 in 4 years.

Really? Every influencer from the states has at least 1 or 2 YouTube videos about caribou hunts it seems. I guarantee those get 10 times the views of most Rokslide threads.

Youtube gets a lot of traffic but I can promise you google gets a lot more. I'm not singling you out for this thread, just merely making a point about observations and the fact the moderators don't even adhere to their own rules.

A simple experiment, go over to google and type in "caribou hunting alaska" or some iteration of it. You will find that this forum and its caribou hunting threads that basically hold people's hands on how and where to go and every other thing about hunting caribou up here, rank much higher in the search results than any youtube videos. Thus, directing much more traffic flow to rokslide than youtube for videos.

Use your wife’s phone. . . Rokslide pops up because YOU’RE on Rokslide.

Reddit was the only discussion based platform that popped up when I googled “Alaska caribou hunting” on my wife’s google profile.

AK fish and game was first, followed by two outfitters, Reddit, and other outfitter, then YouTube videos.
