That would also be stupid. Guide requirements are nothing but industry protection by the state designed to shift opportunity to the wealthy.

Better, stop having the tax payer save people for free and send bills when a Pave Hawk and PJs pull someone off a mountain.

Edit: I would be a fan of requiring guides to be residents and aligning hunting residence requirements with the PFD.
100% guides should be AK residents.

I was just joking but….

Every industry has protection. There isn’t one that doesn’t.
Agree, but some forms of protectionism is worse than others, some surve more purpose than others (think medical licensing vs hair dresser). Many should be scaled back.
There are no free rescues by the PJs.
The Fed doesn't charge, whether the Coast Guard in SEAK or PJs (though the Army is also doing some now) in other parts.

The Fed is not allowed to compete with civilians, so if say Med Flight can make the run, you get a bill. But, Med Flight lacks the weather, range, and hoist capabilities of the Uniformed Services. So, plenty of people get picked up for free.
Don’t kid yourself. Our country would be better off with a lot less military spending.
Not sure how that has anything to do with this discussion.
I could get on board with guides having to be residents.

I don’t see requiring a guide any worse than any of the others . Not sure how you correlate it to wealth in your comment when every animal in NA can be hunted DIY. If anything it’s a poor example due to no consistency between states. You want to see “protectionism” look no further than the medical field and the fact medical bankruptcy is on the rise due actual “protectionism” regulations etc. requiring a guide to shoot an animal isn’t bankrupting anyone or causing undue stress, fear etc. So I don’t give a f*** if someone cries about the requirement in life to hire a guide for an animal. Not in the top 10,000 problems to worry about in life or even regarding wildlife.

Btw PJ rescues are NOT free. That’s our tax money at work.

Wow, talk about being intentionally abtuse. If you are going to state the obvious at least make it interesting and tell us the cost in dollars.

After reading that, now I wonder if rather than being intentionally obtuse, you may actually find the fact that everything consumes a resource a ground breaking idea.

Good for you, now why are you arguing about it?

This would benefit Alaskans more than anything else.

My buddy had the Resurrection tag on the Kenai this fall. After a couple different trips and 12 days in the mountains he saw a total of Zero caribou. And he's no slouch in the hills. The numbers just aren't there anymore.

Why can people make posts like this and continue to spot blow the sh!t only out of Alaska on this site?

Ummm, the answer is no. There isn’t really anything to put in for for caribou. There are like 3 draw hunts left for caribou, and you’re not going to draw any of them anyway. Well maybe 23 or whatever went draw for non-residents a few years ago. Another couple years the central arctic herd will succumb to being the only road system hunt left, then we can all just forget that caribou were a thing you could hunt once upon a time.
