Would like to go to to AK in sping of 2028 or 29 for Black bear. There would be a group of 5 of us. Im starting to research places/outfits.

What are the pros and cons of boat based versus lodge based? Is one more successful, less stressful or easier physically than the other?

Any recommendations for either type of hunt? Would like to do a bit of fishing while up there, but bears would certainly be the main focus.

We just got back from a hunt with Coffman Cove adventures on POW (which is a draw so this is just a reply focused on pros and cons of a lodge based DIY hunt)

Having a solid place to come back and eat a warm, hearty, home cooked meal was awesome. Having a place to wash some clothes and get your boots on a dryer was amazing. Gave you enough comfort creatures to give you the confidence and ability to stay out till the absolute last moment.

The only con I can think of is it was a little harder to be mobile to other sides of the island. Mentally it’s harder to make a 2 hour drive when you know you have two hours back after a 10 pm sunset.

We had good success bear hunting as well. Road hunting and checking big grassy tidal flats
