Going to the Peninsula in October for a Brown Bear hunt and one of the final pieces of gear I need to work out is what to do for rain. I know Brooks Range they say not even Goretex will hold up not as sure about that far south. Considering Kutana, Yukon, or Stormfront. Potentially if more rubberized is required some version of Helly Hansen but prefer breathable materials. Anyone have any experience here or can provide guidance?

I am going to Kodiak this fall. I was told to bring a Helly Hansen Impertech jacket in additional to a hunting gore-tex rain jacket.

You'll appreciate full on rubber rain gear like Helly Hansen, and your pocket book will as well. I've only hunted the Pen once, near Cold Bay, and I was sure as hell happy to have Helly Hansen.

My dad was down there this spring in brand new Stormfront. Complete failure in less than a day busting brush. Finished the trip in HH. Sometimes GTX works, sometimes it doesn't. Just depends on conditions, and they can be bad down there.

Kryptek has a 50% off sale going on right now with their altitude gear. I hear that’s as legit as it gets so you might be able to get a set of that for $600ish right now

The weather on the pen - generally - is a lot wetter than the Brooks. I love breathable rain gear as much as anybody, but having hunted both places, I would 100% use HH Impertech on your bear hunt.

I would highly recommend HH for the boat and camp and another pair of breathable Kuiu or Sitka for hiking if it's not super brushy (which most places are and you have a place to dry it out every evening). Make sure your jackets have pitzips!

It can be absolutely miserable weather there. Have always used pvc coated stuff like Grundens Petris. Also brought a Yukon jacket once and wore for a bit and went back to my Grundens. I have a SEAK jacket but I wouldn't take that either.

For what it’s worth, it’s been the dryers summer on record, by a wide margin on the peninsula. Been easy fishing for the bears, the creeks are so low. We had the first rain in six weeks last night, normally we celebrate six days W/O rain.
As to your rain gear, bring HH or Grundens along with your Gortex. I wear a Gortex jacket every day, when sprinkles turn to steady rain I pull on a real rain coat.
Who are you hunting with?
