AK Packer Opportunities

Hey,

I am a senior living in southern Maine, when I graduate this summer I plan to take a gap year and thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, after which I would love to do a stint as a packer in AK, preferably in the fall. I have some hunting experience, but very little, however, I do have decent outdoor experience and am willing to work hard and learn fast.

That said, does anybody here have any suggestions about what Guides/Outfitters I should get in contact with? I'm looking for someone of good character and reputation to work for.

I was also wondering how feasible my plan is. Are guides looking for young people like me for grunt work? My Dad did something similar back in the day, but I'm not sure if the scene has changed.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

AK is a strong goal, but don't turn your back on opportunities to work in other states too. I don't know where to start looking but I'd add most of the western states to your search.

There are some super reputable hunting outfits in Alaska. Do your research, which is available right here on Rokslide, and reach out to them directly. Billy Molls and others are legendary.

I would recommend looking up the members list for the Alaska Professional Hunter’s Association. You want to find the Registered Guide and Outfitter list with business names associated for the outfitters. (The business name is important, because you can be a registered guide and still work for a guide business that you don’t own)
Look up the businesses online, and if they have federal hunt areas, start calling them. The federal lands in ak are exclusive guide use areas and if a business has one of these areas, there is a high probability that they are reputable. If this doesn’t get you anywhere, then start calling guides on that list and asking them if they know of packer opportunities for the fall. The season will be between early August until November depending on what area and hunts an outfitter does.

I was very focused and worked hard at your age and I have reaped rewards. However, I missed some opportunities and absolutely wish I would have done what you are doing.
