Age and Points

Just turned 60. Stepped into western big game hunting (waaay too late) last year, after 45 +/- years of waterfowling. Successful deer hunting friends in my duck club kept feeding me venison and I developed the taste. Five days scouting, 7 days solo hunting on foot in a low density/ easy draw resident zone yielded nothing but starter experience. Had no idea of all the current challenges getting tags in most areas and no idea it had all become so popular requiring so many points until recently. So have adjusted my outlook and expectations for a muley or pronghorn sharply downward accordingly, and will save up for guided access and help. Learning rifles, reloading centerfire, muzzleloaders has been very rewarding though and will keep after that. Will chase pigs and possibly hunt farther east for more available whitetails. Time will tell.....

Late 50s here - trying to decide if I want to keep chasing points, have 2 antelope and should have 6 or 7 when retire. Not sure what points will buy in 5 years. Antelope are fun and wife will be on next hunt trip, she'd enjoy that i think.

Im 62 and got lucky enough this year to use my 5 pts in Wyoming for what will most likely be my last elk hunt. It’s just too expensive and complicated to continue giving them my money.

Welp, I gave in and applied again for elk with 0 pts. Struck out in Wy, but got one in Co. with 0. Looks like I’ll be bow hiking at least 1 last time.

Little luck 🍀 last week in the Nevada draw. I will take it.

Nothing is getting simpler or easier to draw, nonetheless. Internet and social media changed everything about 20 years ago.

Can’t quit now. I’m in for the long run…I always encourage everyone to “Apply, Apply, Apply!” You will hit sooner or later.

Good luck 🍀 and Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

I still wonder why I buy antelope points. Got 22 in AZ, 19 in NV and 17 in UT. Almost afraid to draw and have to go half way across the country for an antelope hunt. Never hunted antelope but did have a tag in Wyoming a few years ago that I burned because too many other hunts.
