That's very thoughtful but it would be better to get him a gift card/voucher so the he can purchase one of his own choosing.

Barring that, I vote Benelli M2.

I have an a300 20ga I pick up over my maxus and new a5 for duck and bird hunting all the time

Franchi Affinity. It'll be at the top of your budget for a wood one though.
I absolutely love my Franchi! It is definitely on the higher end, but beautiful and a great piece to add to a collection.
Franchi alcione 12ga over/under.

Since he’s in Charleston, call Backwoods Quail Club, and tell them what you’re doing It’s about a hour away. They’re a Beretta dealer and have some really good instructors there. He will get a good gun and a good start with it.

I shoot there a good bit and took my level one and two SCAA instructor courses there. I hunt a few miles from there.
