Advice needed for Winchester M70 30-06

So I have a stainless synthetic M70 30-06 that I leave in the Carolina’s to deer hunt with. Over the last few years I have been using a compass 6.5 creed because it’s threaded when I go back East to hunt (I live out west now).

My thought is I’d like to use my 06 more because it’s a nice rifle, and was my first real deer rifle.

So here’s what I’m thinking.

1. Have it threaded and muzzle brake installed in order to allow me to use my TB cans on it.

2. Put a mcarbo trigger spring kit in.

3. Maybe get a new stock? Thoughts and recommendations? I bought the gun new in 1999.

4. Upgrade the vortex Diamondback scope in it. Right now I have three that I can put in it. A Nightforce NXS 3-15x50, a Trijicon Credo 2.5-15x42 or a Sig whiskey 5 3-15x52.

5. Leave it alone and continue to use my Thompson. Maybe buy something already threaded.

This will only be used for deer and bear back east. What has me thinking on this is I just redid a tikka t3 wsm and it’s like it’s a new gun. Pic below. Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Boy that's a tough question since it is your first rifle, and I'm a bit of a Model 70 fan. It's really up to you, I doubt you'll ever get rid of it since it's your first real deer rifle. It's not a pre 64, but then again it may become collectable later on. If you reload I'd say load up some 300 WSM to 30-06 velocities and drive on. But really it's up to you. Whatever you feel is best for you. I hope that helps.

You could upgrade the scope and throw a McMillan or some other new stock on it. Shoot it and see how it feels. Throw a can on last if you want.

What kind of stock does it have? If it's a nice wood one, upgrade the scope and trigger and leave as is. Not a lot of practical benefits to a composite stock for almost all hunting east of the Mississippi and a classic M70 is about as pretty as it gets in its unmolested form.

Upgrade scope. Do you look at it as a collectable or nostalgic as it currently is? If not set it up as a tool to be used for its purpose. Is it mainly used for stand hunting, drives, stalking? Would all determine on how I would personally set it up.

I have great luck polishing winchester sears and reducing the spring. I typically get 3# virtually creep free and maintain the bulletproof design.

Threading it is a piece of cake and there's plenty of smiths in the south.

Now you all have me thinking about getting something different perhaps the cz 600 in order to have my threaded solution. And making minor upgrades to my m70 (no plans to get rid of it ).

You may be able to cut the barrel back and have it thick enough for 5/8x24. It would make it easier to get in and out of stands with the shorter barrel as well.
