Advice: Love hunting; don't like the meat

Guess I'm going to be different. If your not eating any of it, you shouldn't be killing it.

I get it if you end up with more in your freezer than you can eat and want to give some away to a family in need, but to know before you ever leave your house that you'll be tasked with getting rid of all the meat from any animal, because you won't eat any of it. That ain't right.

Find something you like to eat and hunt that, don't care if it's rabbits or doves, whatever it is, go hunt that primarily.

No, regulations pretty much everywhere do not allow you to sell or barter/trade wild game.

If you were to set up a roadside lemonade stand with a sign that says “Wild Game To Barter” at least in Wyoming a game warden will stop by with a ticket book. You’re saying donation but talking bartering, which are two different things legally.

This may sound a little crass or backwards, or whatever, but I’ll just put it out there and I hope no one is offended… if there happens to be a big city or urban area anywhere near you, there are some really good black folks in the inner city that don’t get the opportunity to hunt, and they love wild game meat and genuinely appreciate a white dude offering it up for free.

I realize nobody is just gonna drive downtown looking for black people, but I’ve found several ways to do this politely where you don’t seem like a total weirdo:

• Load your truck up with a big cooler full of frozen, pre-packaged meat, along with:
  • Several frozen bottled waters (that you intend to give away as ice to keep the meat cool)
  • Some smaller containers to give away (a few empty cardboard boxes or some of those silver insulated bubble wrap bags or at least a bunch of plastic wal-mart sacks)
  • If you’re REALLY nice, bring a few printed out papers with basic instructions on what the meat is, and some simple tips for preparing it.
• Go to the parking lot of a high school football or basketball game and simply talk to the first person you see. They’re very likely to at least point you to someone would want a bunch of free meat.
• If you know where the youth travel football teams practice (typically at public parks in the inner city) you can do this same thing there pretty much any weeknight between 6pm and dark.

Please understand, I’m not using football and basketball to generalize about a group of people, this is just how I randomly happened to find folks who really appreciated and valued the meat that I needed purged out of my freezers anyway. I now have several people who I just hit up on Facebook before the season and ask, “Hey could you use a doe this year?” When it goes towards feeding kids and families that need the food, it makes me feel like I’m doing a good thing.

One thing we do is have it processed into kielbasa and smoked sausage. If you find a good place you can't tell it's game meat. You can even buy mixes to do it yourself if you want. The place I take mine even has hot dogs. I'll eat almost anything buy my wife is pretty picky.
