I'm trying to get all my gear to run off the same batteries. What are some AA head lamps that you would recommend?

I use one Coast headlamp that takes AA. The continuously variable beam and lumens is nice for working around the house in the dark. Quite a bit heavier than the AAA models, but on the other hand it lasts significantly longer on a set of Lithiums or rechargeable. Since I live in the land of eternal winter darkness, it gets some use.

Long-term review: Coast HL27 Headlamp || Bright & quickly adjustable

I kind of suspect the hinge might give out eventually, and I actually lost the rubber battery cover (it's just a friction fit, and isn't tethered) on a AAA version of the same lamp once upon a time... but other than that, it's pretty useful.

If interested, I have a Zebralight H52 I could part with. I just switched to one of their lights that runs on the 18650 battery so I don't really "need" this one anymore. It's a great light and was always in my pack.

Edit: Upon further review, I guess I have an H51. I'm still trying to figure that out for sure so I'd hate to sell something that I wasn't sure of.

I've been super happy with my Zebralight also. Well worth the money.

The 1 thing that kept me from buying the zebralight is the switching modes seemed complicated. Do you guys only use the basic modes for ease of use?
Not trying to derail, just help OP with his choice.

No more AA or AAA's for me. I have a coast headlamp and a lenzer one with AAA's, the light out put is good and adjustable beem is great but batt. life not good. On my Christmas list is a zebra h600 mk3. Everyone I've talked to said 2 rechargeable batts' beats the pants off a handful of AA or AAA's.

If you can operate a smart phone, you can run a zebra. Way less complicated then the instructions make ot sound. I just use the 3 basic settings, usually med or low. High is like a car headlight. 18650 or bust.

I'll mention the Princton Tec, Pro-whatever it is...the big 350 lumen. I've got that same headlamp in a few models, the AA 250 lumen and the CR2 250 and this AA 350. It's like the surface of the sun and batteries and modes and models are simple. Two buttons, spot and flood, high and low for each. Two buttons, done. Waterproof to 1m. Made in USA. I've tried BD and others and ended up with the PT. They've done me well for years.

Again, not to derail the thread, but neither the Zebra or the Fenix have red light. Do you guys just use white and not concerned about night vision/game seeing the light or have you rigged up some filter of somesort? I currently run a Princeton tec that I really like but I'm looking for other options that include a red light/filter.

What's the difference between the cool and neutral and the floody?

just the tint of the beam. a cool beam will appear brighter than a neutral given all things equal. i think that neutral beams show colors a little more true and are better for blood trailing.

pure flood is awesome for working up close. it's like you have daylight at arms length but you can't peer out and identify things at a distance. floody has a hot spot which will throw a little further. the regular beam doesn't diffuse the light and will throw the furthest. i had the neutral floody and while it was a great light, i had to carry a secondary light to be able to see anything far away. if you're traveling known trails, working around camp, etc. floody is a fine option but the second you get off trail and have to navigate in the dark it sucks. if i could afford two i would buy a flood and a regular. if i was forced to pick one i would choose the regular beam and just live with the hot spot on a low setting for up close work.

zebralight has red light models but they are red only. fenix has headlamps with a red option. check out the hl35, runs on aa.

all of the princeton tec headlamps in the tactical series have either colored filters or red led options.
