It happens but not a lot or at least you don’t hear much about it and rightfully so. I’ve had ranchers here and there suggest things. Problem is no one wants to go to jail over a donkey or a horse.
Another thing that might get you into bigger trouble is I’ve encountered branded free range horses on public lease land in AZ. One herd had bells on some of them presumably so whomever owned them could hear them and go round them up. There’s at least a couple of ranches down here where some of their mules run free. I wonder what would happen if you shot any of those up and got caught?
It’s a fine **up to $2,000. We all know what that means, especially when it comes to poaching deer/elk. Basically, you’ll be fined a few hundred dollars slap on the wrist. In Wyoming it’s up to $750. Jail time language is always used but never happens. Getting caught would mean you really messed up. They are obviously protected by the wild horse and burrow act but it’s not nearly the same as say, grizzly protections. Correct me if I’m wrong tho…Not like they have collars or names like the g bears.
I don’t recommend anyone do this, all
Tongue in cheek here. I wouldn’t do it ; ) The outlaw comes out in me when we are dealing with something that is illegal (for all the wrong reasons) but morally something has to be done sooner than later. If/When they kill off the last sheep in a certain region because of water access then hunters might wish they did something. BLM and federal fish and game has their hands tied on this issue, it’s only going to get worse. Most people don’t even realize that horses have ZERO predators to help keep them in check!
