…the same as a 30-06 hitting a deer at approximately 575 yards if bullet is the same.

This to me is a great illustration why the 308 is ample horsepower for whitetail deer here in the Southeast.

I don’t know that most people would disagree, I have one in a Model Seven and agree it’s plenty for deer! To me that also illustrates that the 30-06 is better if you’re intending to shoot to 275 😂

My self limit is 500 yards and my 308 load is at 1900 FPS 1400 lbs KE at that distance.

Mine has the short barrel (16.5) so I don’t push it past 300. It’s shoots ttsx the best, if I went to something a little softer it’d probably be fine
Mine is a 15.75" barrel with the 155 A-Max, so right around 450 yards - Impact velocity of 1819 fps is about as far as I will kill deer or antelope with it.
With barrel lengths of 20" on up the distance can push further out, and I would move to a 168 grain ELD-M/A-Max.
The 308 Win is a viable cartridge out west as well.
Most people do not kill big game beyond 500 yards, and even less beyond 600 yards @General RE LEE

I do have a 308 Win rifle that is not made for hunting, even though my son did take a lope with it at 618 yards 10 years ago when he was in High School. 200 grain Hybrid-One Shot and done.
With the 200.20x Berger, the current load, has a impact velocity of 1800 fps right at 775 yards.

Any reason for a 15.75” vs 16”? 1/4” doesn’t seem worth $200 and the added headache to me

Not a rifle...It is a customized center-grip Remington XP-100.
While doing drop confirmations (500 yards). 10" steel on the left.

Mladen using it at WY-SHOT last year. He placed high enough with it, he has been hounding me every since to buy it

I don't know who you have been talking to or reading, but the 308 Winchester is very capable of short to mid-range killing.
This MOA Maximum has a 14", shooting Hornady TAP (168 grain A-Max) - 350 yards from a sitting position around 10 years ago.

This was done at night using brand unobtainium NV on a 16.25" rifle-Same ammo as above. Synchronized shooting. My friend was a using a 243 Winchester with 105 A-Max's.

Close range around 75 yards-Same ammo as above

Just under200 yards-Same ammo

308 vs 30-06. 150-165 grain bullets give the 308 the advantage. 180 or heavier, advantage goes to the’06. Just my opinion, not trying to derail the thread.

Literally identical for 168 grain ELD-M. Completely depends on the cartridge you shoot, but in the field essentially no meaningful difference for me. I'm not shooting past 500 and either is absolutely lethal on all North American game to 500 yards with identical bullets.

I have only been hunting with a .308 for a few years, but I’ve been impressed using the 165 grn SSTs. I shot this 300 plus pound boar hog at 80 yds through the front shoulder. It had the thickest shield of any hog I’ve ever shot at around 3/4” thick. I found the bullet just under the hide off the opposite shoulder. The pig made it 20 yds.
