So after @TheUgly posted his results from the 88 ELDM's on the .223 thread, I wanted to ask what kind of barrel life would I expect out of a 22 Creed?

Depends on how hot you get it, and what you deem is acceptable precision. 1,500-2,000 rounds is a safe bet.

The 22 creed is super fun, you’ll love it. Mines 26” and the 88’s go north of 3300. I didn’t have any luck with the 77tmks, they all exploded in the air with my 7.5 twist. 75eldms also shot really well.

Yikes!

I have a 22” 7 twist and wondered if the 77 TMK could survive.

I haven’t chrono’d the 88’s yet.

?

I have seen a lot of 77gr TMK’s shot from 22CM’s with 1-7” and 1-7.5” with no issues. They have a thicker jacket than 75gr ELD-M’s. Not only that, I am aware of a couple of people shooting the 77gr TMK’s at more than 3,500fps MV with no issues.

What is your setup that caused “all” 77gr TMK’s to explode in the air?

Your guess is as good as mine. The 77tmk is the only bullet I’ve had come apart. About 3/4 of the 10 or so I shot exploded in flight. 7.5 twist, tikka prefit from preferred barrels. I only shot the 75 eldms when the barrel was new. I’ve got about 300 rounds down the pipe now. The TMKs we’re going 3425fps propelled by RL26

Thank you. That is an oddity, and not normal. I have shot and have seen shot several PBB barrels of that exact type and chambering with 77gr TMK’s for thousands of rounds.

I’ll give the barrel a good scrub and try em again. I’d love if they’d stay together as I’ve got 300 more of them

Haha. I nor anyone I’m around cleans barrels. It does make me curious on yours.

I’m not much for barrel cleaning either so I either got a bad batch of bullets (not sure how that could happen) or carbon build up is shredding jackets? I was shooting them at 750 yard target and my spotter said it looked like they were flying to the moon after a couple hundred yards.

I'm leaning towards 22 BR, GT or XC for this exact purpose and wanting a muzzle velocity of 2800-2900 fps with the 88 ELD-M, but brass availability is a hindrance. for plug and play with off the shelf components the 22 creed seems to be the way to go.

I have 80gr ELDms coming out of my 22br at a middle to low powder charge. I think you could accomplish your velocity goal with the 88gr very simply. Brass was/is easy to come by, and I don't have to do anything special other than size.

I stayed away from the creedmoor because I wanted more barrel life.

The 22 Creed is coming along. An SWFA 3-9 is on the way.

I am actually going with a Preferred Barrel prefit. I am undecided on the twist rate though. I have read about the 88 ELDM coming apart in 7 twists. (Maybe that has been rectified?) I know guys on here running them in 8 twist rechambered Tikkas. So I am thinking a 7.5 would be a good middle ground?

Preferred uses 3R rifling.

Would you guys run a 7.5 twist or a 7?

3 groove is particularly hard on bullets, right? I think Kirby Allen has written about Lilja 3 grooves ruining bullets at high velocity+right twist, and using more grooves solving the problem. With that in mind, I'd probably go 8 twist.

Mine is a 26” 7.5t #1 sporter
Slings the 88s no problem. Most accurate gun I own with just about ever bullet I’ve put through it

Iv been mulling over the bullet rpm stuff lately, and plan on limiting velocity with a shorter barrel. Part of the appeal to the 22 creed is velocity out of a short rifle.

I am also going to run a shorter barrel. I am debating on 18” or 20”. I plan on running a suppressor. I reached out to Preferred for a twist rate recommendations and they referred me back to Hornady. I am leaning pretty heavily towards the 7.5 twist.
