It’s all academic… if you reload the SAUM is plenty available. Look at the custom brass makers who barely keep up.
It’s splitting hairs, but the little differences are what we all fret over, lol. I just said to myself “I like short actions, I only want short actions.” So, I sold my 7 REM Mag, but my 7 SS wasn’t any better on the ballistics. The buddy who bought it is happy and still shooting tiny groups. If he draws a tag he will kill something with it.
Consider a 7 Sherman Short, more case capacity than a SAUM but shoulder pushed back to run the 180 VLD in an AICS magazine. Sherman blew out the case taper and increased shoulder to 40.
I run the 180 VLD at 3025 in a 26” barrel. You get a little more speed than the saum.
If you run the lighter bullets with more velocity, you get the benefits inside reasonable hunting distances.
Like has been said above, 7 mags, even short ones, launching bullets at speeds and ballistics that most shouldn’t go beyond. Use a good bullet and you’ll slay. The 280 ai nearly matches the ballistics out to most hunting distances.
When I started, I thought I needed a bigger bullet.
It was more than I needed so I dropped to a 25 SST shooting 133 out of a 21” barrel at 3100 fps. My next rifle will be a 22 creed…
