I am looking to purchase a new 7mm Remington Magnum rifle this week to serve as my all around big game hunting rifle. I have extensive experience with the chambering and just haven’t found the rifle I like best for it. Will be used for deer from box stands primarily, but will also be used for hogs and western big game - mule deer, pronghorn, and possibly elk.

I am looking for an all weather rifle and am leaning towards one of the following (no love for tikka):

Browning x bolt 2
Bergara wilderness ridge
Christensen arms mesa
Winchester 70 ultimate shadow

Not a big tinkerer, so looking for a turnkey rifle. Already have my optics.

Thanks

Buy whichever one you can get the best deal on.

In my opinion, choosing between those is pretty much like choosing which chocolate glazed donut you want, Dunkin, Tim Hortons, Krispy Kreme, or a gas station donut. They will all work (taste) pretty much the same.

If you hand load… I have an X bolt 7 RM I bought in maybe 2020. Fast twist 1:8 it’ll spit 180s at 3100 fps if you push it. You can load pretty long. That one and my Tikkas that guys in here made me buy are my favorites.

1. Browning X-Bolt 2
2. Bergara Wilderness Ridge
3. Winchester 70
4. Anything other than Christensen

In that order.

Do you prefer top loading with a floor plate, or a magazine?
If you prefer a magazine do you want it flush with the bottom?
Do you want the bolt locked when safe?
Do you prefer side or tang safety?
Do you have a preference of finishes on the steel?
When I asked myself these questions it narrowed my choices down pretty quickly. They all have the same potential to do what you need them too, its the details that make it comfortable to hunt with.

Really liking the Bergara Wilderness Ridge. Reviews seem inconsistent. Are people having luck with the 7mm rem mag version?

If you're serious about not tinkering, get the Tikka. Sorry, I had to say it. I think their stocks are cheap, I don't like the magazine setup or the lack of feed rails for a BDL style option, I don't like their single action length (one size fits none).....but they flat work.

I don't care for the magazines on the Browning and I've always seen them as being overpriced relative to how they shoot.
Bergara always seems to have complaints. Your chance of getting a dud is....well, more than zero. They absolutely make some models I like on paper and I'd be happy if I had one and it shot well - you just do hear of a lot of complaints from them.
Christensen lost me with the level of complaints they've had relative to their price. I wrote them off forever.

I will admit that I haven't read a single thing about newer model 70s so I have nothing to offer there, except that I like the Classic actions.

I guess that if I were set on the price range you're describing, I'd look for a used Seekins PH2.

Also - if I were in your shoes, I'd get a smaller caliber. Absolutely no larger than 6.5PRC and even that would be on the large side of what I'd be focused on. The 7mmRM is a great caliber, it's just more than you need for the hunting you describe.

Not about tinkering = buy a shitbox Tikka that needs 70% of it replaced immediately. Oh yeah, also get a rifle for smaller round, cause Tikk kicks the snot out of you when comparing same rounds. Holy Jesus ;)
The largest Tikka caliber I've ever shot is a 6.5cm. I haven't noticed it recoiling any more or less than other similar rifles in similar calibers.

My .280ai is a R700. My .300wbys were Weatherby Vanguards. 7mmRM was a Sako 75.

Also, I've never replaced anything on a tikka except the $30 vertical grip adapter. So I'm struggling a bit to grasp what you're talking about. Maybe you could explain? Maybe you're pointing out that I'm using a rifle that flat-out works despite me not liking the stock and magazine? I didn't say it needed to be replaced. I said I didn't like it.

I have no idea how that would be any worse than spending twice that on a Browning that I also didn't like.

*shrug*

I really like the Mesa. Machining is great, the receiver design has been reliable and relatively unchanged since before most of us were born, and the barrels are accurate if you clean them. Of all your choices I’d bet lunch the Mesa shoots the best. I like the Mesa stock design and have one for a Remington.

Hard to go wrong with any of your choices.

20" remmag is a great allrounder, run an overbarrel suppressor if you can and shot 160 ish around 2850

i have had 3 of them but always chasing something else 2 of my mates still have my old ones and they are still slaying,

What's the 30% that you find acceptable?
