Does anyone have any real world second hand knowledge of the 7mm sprc or if hornady is even thinking of working on a 7mm prc?

The 7mm sprc is using 6.5 prc brass necked up. The Facebook post are showing solid solid numbers but I haven't seen any raw load data for this round.

This is an old thread. The 7 PRC has since arrived. Not a bad idea to neck up the 6.5 brass up to a 7 mm. But might as well chamber up for a .284 Winchester. Plenty of good brass around and it will shoot a 180 VLD very well! I built one this past summer and it is stupid accurate! But you gotta load up the the 284 win because there ain’t no factory ammo.

Anyone have any new information on this?
Look up the 7 PRCW - it’s the necked up 6.5 with slightly more taper to the body to prevent clickers when loaded to higher pressures. There Is a lot of talk about this cartridge the past 6 months in 1000 yard benchrest and f class as a replacement for the 284.

I’d be interested to see what kind of performance gain there is over the 284. My buddy is brainstorming a short action 7mm with a 20” barrel, and currently 284 is the top contender

That’s interesting…the 6.5 x 284 Norma is very close to the ballistics of the 6.5 PRC. The 284 case doesn’t have the clicker issues. Powder capacity the PRC case is one more grain and the max pressure is the same. You wouldn’t believe how easy it is to work up a load with a 284 win that has a good barrel. They just shoot! F-class would definitely have to wildcat the case to get it into competition. With the 284 Winchester you just buy a Lapua case and load it. Some of those F-class guys have 50K or better invested into their cartridge. It’s gonna take alot of winning I think before anyone wold switch. But I have never competed in rifle, only pistol. So just an uninformed opinion on my part.

I’d rather have your 284 - that’s a classic.
I hear the prcw has 68gr of water, which is very close to the 7 Rem short action ultra mag. Isn‘t that cartridge only 100 fps ish faster than a 284?

I really don’t keep on whats what in f class - I believe some of the European championships were won with the prcw, Eric Cortina won South Africa, and it’s gaining momentum as 284 barrels are shot out and replaced. Maybe it’s a fad that will pass. It would be a shame if Lapua stopped making 284 brass altogether.

Performance against 7 saum was another question I had. They do seem very similar.
