7mm-08 Rem success on big game

7mm-08 - 18” bbl length
150gr ELD-X
IMR8208 XBR
~2625fps

Have taken a few whitetail with this gun and combination with good results. I have found the bullet kills efficiently but doesn’t cause excessive damage to meat.

I need to get better about taking pictures of bullet performance on game but sharing what I do have.

I was considering cutting my 7mm-08 Kimber Montana to 18" and was wondering about the performance I might get with a 150 ELD-X. Thanks for this information 👍.

No problem.

There was another node above the one i settled on but accuracy was a little less than this one. I didn’t have a good chrono then and I also don’t like loading to edge as I’ve seem to find that brass can get trashed pretty quick on a moist day when suppressed and lapua ain’t cheap these days.

Interesting, not Eldm destructive but far more damage than the feared and touted 77 gr. TMK. I like my cartridges to do more damage to the exit side than the entrance side. I have some 162 gr. ELDX but haven used any of them yet.

162 ELDX is legit. My 18" with 46.5gr of SB 6.5 hits 2620 MV. My daughter killed a cow at 185 with one shot in the crease. Cow took a couple steps and tipped over.

I know this is old thread so sorry,

But I’ve seen the light per se on rockslide. Will be getting a tikka or Bergara with a trijicon.

Should I get 7mm-08 or 6.5 creed.

Whitetail, aoudad in Davis mountains, Nilgai are always on my list. What say yall?

I worry about it being too long for 2.8 length boxes. Lot of bullet sticking down into the boiler room.

7-08. Nilgai are some big tough animals. If I were planning on hunting them I would use that as an excuse to get another rifle specifically for Nilgai.

Thank you,

I have a 18 inch Bergara in 308. I hammered
a large mature bull this year. 150gr inner lock

Also have a 30-06 that like 168ttsx.

I was just curious if say a 147 eldm match out of 22 inch tikka would be suitable as a all rounder.

Thank you

If you're worried about 6.5 Creed, go up to 6.5 PRC for an extra 200ish fps.

Both of my 7-08's are Remingtons, a Model Seven and a 700. I ordered them to use in a 280AI on a Springfield action. Need to get that rifle out more.
280AI is a great round for sure. Lots of flexibility with the wide range of 7mm bullets and plenty of case capacity if you want to go fast in a shorter barrel.

Well the range of cartridges that will work just fine with good hits is pretty wide. When I went Nilgai hunting I never saw one standing still but had no problem with my old school 30-06 pushing 180 gr. Partitions. I should add the only Nilgai I saw on that hunt was running and the shot was perfect. Entire hunt time before shooting was one thermos of coffee drank and getting out of the truck, walking less than a hundred yards. Surf fished for a week after.

I have been able take several white tail now with the 150ELD (all less than 100yds). Each time the bullet they all went to sleep fairly quickly and did not cause massive damage. So between the combination of minimal suffering and increased meat yield makes me feel they perform very well.

This is a valid concern if you don't have a Tikka. My OAL with the 162 is 2.925. For Tikka a quick bolt stop change and L mag and you're in business, easy peasy.

Several years ago I had a 7mm-08 with a 26” barrel specifically setup for target shooting. Even with the throat optimized for the 162 eld-m’s with more freebore and still remain in extended Accurate AICS magazines I still ran into issues with donuts using lapua brass.

I will say, however, it is still an awesome combination and I had a lot of really good results with it at distance. Additionally, my reloading practices/equipment have changed since then which might have resolved the donut issue i was getting at the time.

Since the above rifle is much shorter barrel and I use it for PA hunting which doesn’t require much the 150’s have been a good fit that handles both the hunting and midrange target fun.

That said I also have a 24” 7saum in a medium action that is meant for extra stretch if it that was needed.

When I built that 280AI I hadn't heard of the 7 SAUM. Not sure if it existed at the time. I was raised on Mauser and Springfield actions. Plus no matter what we were shooting we kept ranges under 450 yards. Portable rangefinders might not have been available then and I bought my first a couple years ago. Neat tools.
