7mm-08 for elk?

I’m looking at a 7mm-08 as a dual purpose rifle. Looking for opinions about using this caliber for Elk.

If you reload and really want options buy a Tikka and change out the bolt stop and mag and you can run the heavy 7mm options.

7-08 is a very capable cartridge very similar to the 308. I have a few rifles in 7-08, one in an Ackley improved. If all you have is that 708, or it works for the situation you're in, use it. You should be fine. Shoot the bullets in the 140 to 145 range. It'll do it.

I chose 7mm-08 over .270 and 6.5 CM for my daughter last year. She killed a nice bull at 330 yards with 140 Core Lokts...A great all-around caliber!

Shot a cow with mine at 275 this year. Quartering away shot, bullet went in behind the ribcage and destroyed both lungs and got stuck in the hide just forward of opposite shoulder

I like the 140 accu-bonds in my 7-08 and have shot 19 elk with mine since 2013. Ranges from 30 yards to 622.

Matter of fact I've shot 4 with it in 2020.

This one just yesterday, pass through at 160 yards tight behind the shoulder went 10 yards and done.

The 7-08 is a mean little round...seen it.

If my 7-08 didn't weigh a ton I would totally take it elk hunting. That thing shoots like a laser.

He was referring that on a tikka you can change the "effective" action length by swapping out the bolt stop. Turning a tikka 7mm-08 from a short action to long action gives reloading options to seat heavy bullets without taking up case capacity. You would need difference magazines to hold the longer bullets as well.

I did this with my tikka in 308, shooting the 175 LRX near 2800 FPS.
