7 SAUM vs 7 SS

Looking anyone running short barreled 7 SAUM or 7SS? Curious on velocities with 18-20” barrels. With the availability of 7 SAUM brass, I’m thinking about going to 7SS instead, dumping my SAUM stuff and going to the 7SS. I know the SS will outrun the SAUM just curious of velocities out of the shorter barrels.

I originally started with 7SAUM on a Tikka, but with what I had in it I could have gone full custom. I've now got a 7SS on a R700 SA and am really happy how it's come together. I am able to seat the bullets right where I want them and fit in a mag. I'll be happy to share my velocities when I get them over a Chrono as my 7SS is a 20" barrel.

If you are ok with lighter 140-160gr bullets, you can get away with 7 SAUM in a short action. If you want to run 180s, you have to be ok with dealing with the medium action length mess, seating the bullet way deep in a 7SAUM, or go with 7SS.

I was ready to jump into a 7 something build, but the whispering of the 7PRC has me waiting.

If Hornady is going to throw their weight behind it with dies and brass and a heavy bullet...I'll wait for that.

The 7PRC is just going to be a 300PRC necked down to 7mm and almost identical to the current Gunwerks 7LRM. I mean it will be good for pushing the 7mm bullets heavier and higher production, but not really the same beast as the 7SS or SAUM.

Now if they had made it on the 6.5PRC case, it would have been a different story.

but not really the same beast as the 7SS or SAUM.

If by "not the same beast" you mean - easier to get brass, production dies, some factory ammo....then I'm all game.

But I get it. For velo chasers, the 7PRC will likely be dull compared to the SS. However, wont it outpace the SAUM? Doesn't the LRM?

I more meant that it is a true long action magnum, not one of the short mags. It is essentially a modernized 7 Rem Mag and will probably get the full Hornady treatment of dies, factory ammo, brass, heavier bullets.

If it is going to be a necked down 300 PRC I would imagine it will greatly outpace the SAUM and SS. I think he is saying different beast in that the 7 PRC would be designed for a long action and pushing heavy bullets fast, instead of a magnum case designed for efficiency in shorter actions like the SS and SAUM.

The 6.5 case would kind of be a yawner for me too unless factory ammo was important. Especially with lapua 284 brass in the wild.
